Bookkeeper (Contract)

~ Narrow Ridge Earth Literacy Center is a nonprofit organization in northern Grainger County that is dedicated to promoting sustainable living and Earth literacy. ~

For the past 2 ½ decades Narrow Ridge has been engaged in important efforts to conserve Appalachian countryside and to promote environmental awareness and action. Narrow Ridge protects approximately 600 acres of rural land including over 150 acres of wilderness, 45 home sites, and our Natural Burial Preserve.

Position Overview

Narrow Ridge is seeking the services of a person with experience in nonprofit bookkeeping to work an average of 10 hours per week. We are seeking the services of an individual whose motivation derives from a shared concern for our planet. We are currently unable to offer pay competitive with the corporate sector but are willing to negotiate a fee for services.

Responsibilities

• Set up and track Annual Budget in Quickbooks
• Reconcile bank statements
• Record debits, checks and other payments in Quickbooks
• Record deposits in Quickbooks
• Preparation of budget reports, balance sheets and other reports as requested for Board meetings using Quickbooks and Excel
• Preparation for annual audit by Narrow Ridge Board
• Provide information on donors/donations to the Director as requested
• Provide annual summaries of gifts to monthly donors and others as requested
• File the corporation annual report and renew the solicitation permit
• Prepare Form 1099s as needed and transmit to IRS with Form 1096
• Manage employee forms including W-4, I-9 and direct deposit
• Pay employees via Quickbooks and direct deposit
• Prepare Form W-2s as needed and transmit to the SSA with Form W-3
• Pay quarterly payroll taxes and file quarterly Form 941s with the IRS
• Track fixed assets and calculate depreciation expense annually
• Monitor and adjust temporarily restricted funds as needed
• Prepare records for CPA to complete and file the Form 990 tax return
• Prepare and track invoices to land trust leaseholders for property tax payments

Qualifications

Requirements:

• Proven bookkeeping experience for non-profit organizations
• Hands on experience with Quickbooks and Excel
• Solid understanding of basic bookkeeping and accounting payable/receivable principles
• Proven ability to manage accounting figures and financial records
• Data entry skills along with a knack for numbers
• High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
• Educational background in accounting preferred but not required
• Access to computer capable of running Quickbooks
• Ability to work independently

All of our facilities are solar-powered and have waterless composting toilets and other eco-friendly features such as straw bale construction, rain water collection systems, and instantaneous hot water heaters.
