Our mission at Mountain Area Land Trust (MALT) is to save scenic vistas, natural areas, wildlife habitat, water resources, working ranches and historic lands, for the benefit of the community and as a legacy for future generations. ~ 

Did you know that 75% of conserved land is now held by an accredited land trust? MALT is proud to be an accredited member of the Land Trust Alliance, a distinction held by only 10% of all land trusts.  

MALT has protected 20,764 acres of land since 1992, including: 

  • 14,707 acres conserved in 68 private conservation easements through December 2014.
  • 5,965 acres protected through facilitated public projects. Examples include Noble Meadow, Blair Ranch and Beaver Brook Watershed. 
  • 92 acres as part of the 500+ acre Pennsylvania Mountain Natural Area owned by Mountain Area Land Trust. 

MALT is currently working on the following projects: 

  • Completion of trail building at Pennsylvania Mountain Natural Area in Park County.
  • Working with landowners on Conservation Easements in our six county service area. 
  • Working on the the restoration and rehabilitation on two Conservation Easements impacted by the 2012 Lower North Fork Fire. 

Position Overview 

MALT is currently seeking candidates for the role of Land Steward. This is a seasonal 40 hours per week position that works from May 15, 2016 through September 15, 2016. 

Responsibilities 

Conservation Easement Monitoring: 

  • Write Conservation Easement monitoring visit notification letters.
  • Confirm Conservation Easement monitoring visit dates with landowners. 

Prepare for Conservation Easement monitoring visits: 

  • Print forms.
  • Load GPS.
  • Review Maps.
  • Review Conservation Easement Monitoring Plan.
  • Review Conservation Easement Summary.
  • Review past year's Monitoring Reports. 

Conduct Conservation Easement monitoring visits: 

  • Complete landowner interview, update landowner contact information.
  • Take photos at designated GPS points.
  • Record field notes.
  • Track expenses, time and mileage.

Complete Conservation Easement monitoring reports: 

  • Prepare draft report and transmittal letter.
  • Upload photos.
  • Update GPS points and map.
  • Upload GPS points and map.
  • Obtain report and transmittal letter approval by Land Conservation Director and Executive Director.
  • Make corrections to report if necessary.
  • Copy, scan and upload report to required locations.
  • Mail copy of report to landowner.
  • Assist in the maintenance of Conservation Easement monitoring files. 

Mapping: 

  • Prepares Photo Point Maps for monitoring reports.
  • Assists with maintaining GPS files. 

Other Duties: 

  • Assist with the development and application of the organization's database, Salesforce.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Executive Director. 

Qualifications 

Education, Technology Skills and Physical Abilities: 

  • Background or education in Natural Resources or related field.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite necessary.
  • Knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS v. 10.2, field GPS units and Google Earth necessary.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with digital photography and iPad necessary.
  • Ability to work independently in the field necessary.
  • Able to travel across rough mountainous terrain by foot and/or by operating 4-wheel drive or AWD vehicles. 

Note: 4-wheel drive or high clearance AWD vehicle required. 

Compensation: $15 per hour and mileage re-imbursement while performing actual duties as outlined above. No housing offered.
