The position is based at our headquarters in Marin County, CA near Point Reyes National Seashore with offices in Galveston, TX and staff in Boulder, CO and San Jose, Costa Rica.
Position Overview
Turtle Island Restoration Network is a leading ocean and marine conservation organization that has advocated for over 25 years for great protections for our blue-green planet. In that time, the organization has closed down sea turtle slaughter houses and torn down dams blocking salmon runs all with the force of effective advocacy campaigns. The Advocacy Director will play a key role in ensuring that this rich history of ocean conservation continues, and work to make our world a better place.
The advocacy director designs and implements local, national and international advocacy strategies of the organization to promote protection of endangered marine species and healthy oceans. The advocacy director works closely with program, legal, communication and development staff to implement effective grassroots strategies leading to better protections for coasts and oceans around the world.
Responsibilities
Program Planning:
- Work with Executive Director and staff on long-range planning.
- Oversee design, development, implementation, and evaluation of the annual policy priorities.
Program Implementation:
- Be primary advocate and spokesperson for campaigns with the decision-makers, public, and media.
- Develop unique and diverse coalition of partners including NGOs, scientists and other stakeholders.
- Work with communications staff to develop media and outreach materials.
Policy management:
- Develop and advocate for specific policies to protect ocean wildlife with policy makers.
- Work with legislators to promote policies and the public to advocate for policy.
- Provide comments on proposed rules and regulations.
Outreach/organizing Oversight:
- Working with membership staff, oversee progress of organizing effort, integrating efforts to build constituency for environmental agenda.
- Coordinate outreach/organizing with other advocacy tools.
Fundraising Development:
- Work with Development director and membership staff to craft messages for concept papers, letters of inquiry and funding proposals on for foundation and membership fundraising.
Compensation: Salary will be commensurate with experience.
