Position Overview
The Senior Renewable Energy Program Manager (negotiate PPA/EPC contracts), provides program/project development and management focused on the development and implementation of renewable energy power generation, and energy efficiency projects defined to meet Apple's Corporate Renewable Energy goals and commitments.
This position is in the Apple Global Energy Team located in Cupertino, reports to the Apple Energy Program Leader, and helps to coordinate projects. Projects may be through out the US, especially the western states and may also involve some overseas travel. Requires ability to successfully manage numerous projects at one time.
Responsibilities
Major tasks and Duties:
- Significant skills in project management and project coordination of multiple projects; interpersonal relationships of external importance to Apple, Energy, and Project Delivery are needed.
- Day to day duties require frequent coordination with Apple facilities, legal, finance, health and safety, environmental, contracting and procurement personnel.
- The ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a widely diverse interdisciplinary technical team is critical. Discretion and ability to build consensus within Apple, as well as with key federal, state, county and municipal regulatory agencies, outside counsel, sub consultants and subcontractors is needed.
- Able to provide solid assessments of complex and innovative engineering designs, and interact knowledgeably with team members on topics ranging from Renewable Energy Supply using technologies such as PV Solar Thermal, Fuel Cells, micro grid, energy storage and building technologies that lead to building energy efficiency.
- Work in California and other states to evaluate and implement direct purchase of off site renewable energy through equity investments or off- take agreements.
- Support the preparation project development agreements that involve securing energy tax credits, Electrical Interconnect agreements from the local utility, Power Purchase Agreements, Ground Leases and Renewable Energy (RE) Agreements that govern the RE purchases, sale, and delivery of energy to support Apple's facilities.
- This position coordinates due diligence activities with Apple to invest or partner with outside entities, to procure renewable energy generation. This may include project identification, evaluation and development of offsite projects such as biogas or PV. Where appropriate, evaluate emerging technologies, through Apple's agreement with NREL, and where appropriate investing in emerging technologies.
- Typical project development projects involve working through Engineer, Procure, and Construct (EPC) contracts to build these facilities; develop Asset Purchase Agreements to secure the development rights to these projects.
- Manage EPC contractor contracts designed to Engineer, Procure, and Construct renewable energy systems. The position requires project management coaching to the EPC firms to ensure compliance with cost, schedule, and scope goals of target projects.
- Work with the EPC contractors to acquire permits and documents including building permits, Electrical Interconnection Agreements, Geotechnical reports, Hydrology and Surveying Reports, Environmental Due Diligence Reports, Scope of Work, O&M and Performance Guarantee Agreements.
- This position requires consistent program and project planning and implementation within established scope, schedule and budgetary estimate and guidelines. The Job requires travel to Apple renewable project energy sites and properties as needed.
- Assist Apple Energy Manager with Energy Efficiency Program/Project Development and Implementation. Work with Facilities Maintenance staff, including controls engineers, facilities project managers, and MEP engineers, identify energy savings measures through programs such as Retro commissioning, Energy Audits, to provide identification, and rigorous documentation of energy savings.
- Assist facilities staff with project implementation where appropriate and to the extent more identified savings opportunities can be moved to implementation.
- Work with LEED Engineers to coordinate Energy Efforts with LEED Program, and cross-pollinate lessons learned from existing building Energy Efficiency to apply to new Tenant Improvements, including state of the art lighting controls and HVAC Systems. Assist in achieving and tracking realistic energy savings measures with high annual energy savings, and low payback. Keep up with Industry trends in energy efficiency and related technology advances.
Qualifications
Key Qualifications:
- At least 15 years of program/project management and operations management experience focused on renewable energy projects, power generation, commercial construction, energy efficiency, working with and mentoring multi-disciplinary technical personnel and subcontractors.
- Successful candidate should have experience developing, implementing and managing renewable energy and energy efficiency projects from concept to delivery; coupled with a broad understanding of how to cost effectively implement renewable technologies, including solar, wind, fuel cells, geothermal, and other renewable energy sources.
- Prior work experience with Energy firms, Utilities, A&E firms, general contractors and subcontractors engaged in the construction industry building of commercial office buildings, laboratories, data centers, and renewable energy projects, along with a working knowledge of construction safety, environmental due diligence and general construction practices are preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, staff, coordinate, and successfully execute multiple complex projects concurrently within negotiated contract scope of work, schedule and budget.
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proven ability to resolve conflict, motivate and infuse commitment to provide and deliver superior customer service.
Management/Leadership:
- Demonstrated skills as a Senior Project Manager/Project Coordinator leader of multi-disciplinary deal teams. Ability to develop highly collaborative relationships with the internal and external stakeholders e.g., procurement, legal, financial, engineering, regulatory and public relations and project team consultants.
- Demonstrated talent at bringing people together, setting clear expectations as to what needs to get done and by when. Makes internal and external team members, subcontractors and consultants feel like they are part of the team and engenders team commitment to accomplish program and project tasks.
- Demonstrated success in working with and or leading project teams in diverse and often complex working environments.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
- Demonstrates proficiency in communication skills including strong written and oral communication skills that are thoughtful, articulate and detail oriented.
- Must have strong internal and external interpersonal and communication skills in order to develop close working relationships with Apple project managers, engineers, legal, finance, and procurement and senior management. Consistently demonstrates, and models strong ethics and safe behaviors emulating the Apple Code of Conduct and Tenants of Operation. Always make the time to do it right and safely in addition to being a consummate team player.
Education:
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering by accredited educational institution.
- Graduate Engineering Degree preferred.
