Position Overview 

IMT seeks an experienced Managing Director (MD) to guide IMT's organizational growth to the next level. The (MD) reports to the Executive Director (ED), and is part of IMT's Executive Management Team.

The MD will lead the implementation of IMT's multi-year strategic plan. S/he will have overall responsibility for internal operating systems and processes to support a staff of 35 with an annual budget of over $5 million. S/he will oversee Board liaison on behalf of the organization.

The MD must be someone in whom the board and staff can have faith and confidence. S/he must be able both to think at a big-picture level and execute at a tactical level, working closely with colleagues in a collegial, intellectually rigorous, leading-edge workplace. S/he must balance respect for IMT's nimble, entrepreneurial culture with the desire among management and staff for greater structure, accountability and performance.

A strong interest in the environment, energy policy, and/or green buildings; a Bachelor's or Master's degree; and 10+ years' experience in a relevant role are preferred. A sense of humor, a gift for multi-tasking, and the ability to lead and motivate a great team are essential to success in this role.

Responsibilities 

The Managing Director will lead the internal strategy and operations of IMT, including: 

  • Develop organizational strategy with the Executive Director, and staff the ED and Team Leads in implementation of the overall organizational strategy.
  • Build, lead and maintain an effective senior management team, providing them with training, guidance and ensuring accountability. 
  • Develop program-level strategy with the Team Leaders, and oversee its successful implementation.
  • Develop, implement and maintain policies, processes and systems that enable IMT to achieve its strategic plan and goals. Ensure performance goals are set and met.
  • Manage administrative functions to ensure smooth and efficient operations of the organization, including: staff work plans, staff meetings, team meetings.
  • Coordinate the logistics, reporting and expansion of IMT's Board, and lead Board relations on behalf of the organization.
  • Support the organization's strategic alliances and partnership.
  • Plan and implement the annual calendar of activities including fundraising initiatives, special events, Board meetings, etc.
  • Help team leaders create budgets and track expenditures.
  • Coordinate professional development opportunities for staff members (in conjunction with Chief Financial and Administrative Officer). 

Qualifications and Skills  

  • The successful candidate will be mission-driven and have demonstrated leadership abilities in scaling up an organization and overseeing processes that support the capacity of a bright, diverse staff. 

Additional qualifications include: 

  • Thorough understanding of and experience with strategic development and planning, analysis, and organizational design and effectiveness.
  • Exceptional capacity for managing and leading people, ability to connect staff on an individual level and to develop and empower staff. 
  • Strong quantitative skills and attention to detail.
  • Successful candidate will be results oriented and able to react to changing needs of a growing organization.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in management, policy, real estate, or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of IMT's field of work (energy efficiency in buildings, real estate, and related policies and market considerations) strongly preferred.
  • The courage to make difficult decisions when required.
