Position Overview
The Opportunity:
PFT's development and communications team requires a nimble staff member with a strong PR background who can manage multiple and frequently competing priorities, and produce efficiently under pressure with enthusiasm and grace.
The Communications Manager (Manager) role is crucial to reaching the supporters and stakeholders who help Pacific Forest Trust conserve irreplaceable private forest landscapes-60% of all forests in the U.S.
This is a diverse, hands-on position that requires initiative, critical thinking, and playing well with others. The Manager balances daily systems and organizational tasks with complex deadline-driven writing, web, and graphic production projects all with this goal in mind: communicate the essence of the organization and our work, find what is compelling about each, and seize each opportunity to promote those stories.
The right candidate will secure great media coverage and shape communications for PFT's constituents.
Responsibilities
Media Relations
- Produce media campaigns or support campaigns produced by media consultants
- Promote article placement and oversee associated message development
- Write, edit and distribute press releases, media advisories and op-ed pieces
- Manage editorial board visits, press events and field trips
- Maintain and upgrade internal database of media contacts
- Manage internal archive of media stories featuring PFT for web and print
PFT News and Publications
- Write and edit content for PFT's magazine, ForestLife, twice yearly news bulletin Leaflet, and twice monthly ForestFLASH emails
- Manage production, design and distribution of all news materials
PFT Website
- Oversee final launch of new website. Manage all content population
- Write and edit news, events, blog posts, and news-related content for the web
- Manage and maintain online archive of PFT press coverage
- Manage and produce all social media content
Other Outreach and Constituency Building
- Propose and help develop new communications vehicles (blog, etc.)
- Assist in creation and production of other PFT publications and printed materials including fundraising brochures, new campaign materials and event marketing
- Provide materials for PFT workshops, conferences and other events
- Support staff in the development of PowerPoint presentations
- Maintain and expand PFT's visual resources library
Qualifications
- Systematic, results-oriented person who thrives in an entrepreneurial environment
- Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communications, specifically content for news articles, press releases and the web
- Minimum 5 years' experience in public relations, media outreach, writing, editing, journalism and/or marketing communications
- Background in public policy, natural resources, forestry or conservation desirable
- Graphic design and production skills essential; at minimum, must be able to work within templates for Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, PowerPoint
- Experience with web software and social media a must, preferably WordPress
- HTML and other web programming skills a big plus
- Fluency with current Mac operating system and Mac Office applications
- Valid California Driver's License
- Able to Sit at a desk for extended periods of time and lift up to 20 pounds
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills
- Personable and flexible
- Able to work effectively in a small, busy organization

Compensation: PFT offers an excellent benefit package. Salary is dependent upon experience.
