The Urban Land Institute (ULI) , is a nonprofit research and education organization supported by its members. 

Founded in 1936, ULI is an independent global organization with more than 33,000 members worldwide representing the entire spectrum of land use and real estate development disciplines working in private enterprise and public service.

A multidisciplinary real estate forum, ULI facilitates an open exchange of ideas, information, and experience among industry leaders and policy makers dedicated to creating better places.  

Position Overview

ULI is seeking a Director to join its Content team and help lead ULI’s activities in the areas of climate change, energy, sustainability, and resiliency.

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED) of the ULI Center for Sustainability (the “Center”), the Director will be responsible for the resiliency component of the Center as well as the Center’s Resilience advisory service program, program of work, resiliency research, conferences, and outreach to district councils. 

Specific Responsibilities 

  • Work with ULI's ED of the Center for Sustainability, its staff and member leadership to advance ULI's content development on issues related to climate change, energy, and resiliency.
  • Work with the ED and other ULI staff to ensure that the programs of the Center are integrated with one another and with other programs at ULI and that the information about the Center's mission and program of work is effectively disseminated to ULI's members, partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement programming around resiliency.
  • Manage the Center’s Resilience advisory services programming, as part of ULI’s overall Advisory Services Program.
  • Plan and execute Center-related conferences.
  • Develop plan to partner with and perform outreach to district councils.
  • Prepare and conduct meetings with ULI members and outside experts to research and disseminate ideas as they are relevant to ULI.  This may include organizing forums; developing event programs; identifying speakers and participants; developing supporting materials and implementing follow up actions.
  • Research and write documents for publication and dissemination through various ULI distribution channels.
  • Provide support for and collaborate with ULI’s Greenprint Program, which is focused on engaging the real estate industry in energy efficiency performance measurement.
  • Represent ULI to the media on an as-needed basis.
  • Serve as an expert resource and advisor to ULI members, district councils, and staff.
  • Assist in attracting sponsorship and foundation grant funds.
  • Maintain, grow, and identify additional partnerships with groups outside ULI to further the mission of the Center and of ULI. 

Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in real estate, sustainability, urban planning, engineering, or related degree. 
  • 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in sustainability related work, with at least two years directing projects around sustainability or resilience. 
  • Extensive knowledge, experience, and expertise in a broad range of topics related to real estate, especially resiliency, and broad knowledge of climate change and associated sustainability issues.
  • Experience in research, education, and outreach projects. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in working as a team player in a variety of settings.
  • Experience in providing technical assistance to public and nonprofit organizations. 
  • Experience in finance and infrastructure and land use development helpful. 
  • Experience in the working with and for non-profit organizations.
