~ Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) is an international campaigning organization founded in 1989, with offices in Washington, D.C. and London, UK. We work worldwide-protecting the global climate, forests and threatened species with intelligence-for the benefit of people and wildlife. ~ 

Position Overview

EIA, a non-profit advocacy organization, is seeking a motivated, organized and committed campaigner to join one of the most dynamic advocacy teams in Washington today.

EIA's Forest Campaign documents and exposes illegal logging and associated trade and supports civil society organizations engaged in forest governance reform around the world. EIA uses evidence obtained from investigations of illegal timber trade flows to push for meaningful policy reform to stem the demand and funding for these illegal activities. 

Responsibilities  

The position will entail a wide diversity of activities, including: 

  • Working in close collaboration with the Eurasia Team Coordinator and the Forest team, the Trade and Policy Analyst will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to halt illegal logging and improve forest governance globally, with particular emphasis on the Eurasia region (China, Japan and Eastern Russia).
  • Conduct investigations of forest related crimes and global supply chains of illegal timber, including through analysis of trade data and online and field research.
  • Participate in follow-up advocacy or other activities that may result from investigations, including drafting of credible and robust analytical and investigative reports and briefing papers, and employing audiovisual techniques to document environmental abuses.
  • Conduct policy analysis of relevant laws and regulations as well as multilateral and bilateral policies affecting environmental issues, with particular emphasis on the Eurasia region.
  • Educate relevant stakeholders through conducting trainings in investigative and audio-visual techniques to monitor and report forest crimes and other social or environmental abuses.
  • Outreach to relevant stakeholders to build effective coalitions, including through organizing meetings and maintaining communications with key stakeholders in the private sector, government and academia. 

Qualifications 

Skills & Requirements: 

  • Possess strong research and analytical skills;
  • Strong demonstrated oral and written communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular a collaborative and cooperative approach to work, as well as an ability to network and to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people, across a variety of settings;
  • Background in environmental policy, business, finance, economics, supply chain management, procurement and/or international trade policy;
  • Close attention to detail;
  • Willingness to travel frequently;
  • Be flexible and willing to be involved in investigative work; and
  • Have at least three years of relevant work experience. 

Desireable Qualifications: 

  • Strong language skills in verbal and written Mandarin, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, French, or other languages a plus;
  • Master's in economics, business, finance, international trade, or a related field or extended experience in the field;
  • Experience in advocacy and campaigns at the national or international level;
  • Experience working in China, Japan, and/or Russia, willingness to outreach to civil society organizations and/or rural communities;
  • Experience in journalism, photojournalism, or documentary filmmaking;
  • Experience with database, trade network analysis, or other relevant analytical software programs;
  • Technical experience with photographic and video equipment; and
  • Experience working with journalists and media to advance international campaign objectives.
