New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) is the only non-profit organization with a New England geographic focus and a pro-forest mission. ~

We conserve forests and promote sustainable forest management to permanently protect the character of New England and the region's primary source of clean water and air, native wildlife habitat, diverse recreational opportunities, and rural economic opportunity.

In the last 16 years NEFF has protected one of every three acres of land conserved in New England and currently manages more than 140 properties that the organization owns outright and more than a million acres of conservation easements. Position Overview  

The Communications Associate must understand the essence of New England Forestry Foundation's mission and translate that into relatable and relevant content via social media, earned media, and traditional communications (newsletters, advertising etc).

The position joins a five-person communications and development team. Primary duties focus on increasing exposure and reach of NEFF within the regional, and possibly national, scale. The position will also implement development of a Strategic Marketing and Communications plan to align the communications of the entire organization.

The position requires strong organizational skills, comfort communicating and networking online with donors and leaders of partner organizations, and-- as a member of a small but ambitious staff - willingness to pitch in on diverse tasks as needed. 

This position is based at NEFF's Prouty Woods headquarters in Littleton, MA.  

Responsibilities  

  • Understand the essence of New England Forestry Foundation's mission and translate that into relatable and relevant content via multiple platforms including social media, earned media, and traditional communications (newsletters, advertising etc).
  • Regularly post on NEFF's social media venues (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram), maintain partnerships with other social media posters, explore new social media opportunities.
  • Track analytics and report on growth in reach.
  • Maintain a content calendar and regularly update it with input from various staff.
  • Work collaboratively with staff to schedule and produce monthly eNewsletters.
  • Develop and execute quarterly organizational newsletters including writing some articles, soliciting staff to write others and contracting for professional writers to develop others.
  • Oversee newsletter design and printing and other publications as needed.

In collaboration with a board committee, lead development and execution of a Strategic Marketing and Communications plan for the organization as a whole to include: 

  • Understand key demographics and what messages they will best respond to.
  • Work closely with board and outside experts to sharpen the organization's brand look and feel including new visual design standards.
  • Oversee revamp and launch of a new web platform for the organization.
  • Ensure that all communications messaging is consistent in content and image.
  • Create internal training and educational materials to support the brand platform. 

Qualifications 

Required: 

  • High quality, compelling writer.
  • Outstanding people skills. Able to choose the right means of communications and the appropriate timing for communications.
  • Attention to detail and outstanding organizational abilities. Capable of aligning multiple priorities through time while coordinating with diverse partners and other staff.
  • Team player. Enjoys participating in a team that delivers high quality results even when personal contributions are somewhat behind the scene.
  • Ability to work independently. Willingness to make and execute decisions.
  • Facility with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Hootsuite (or an equivalent), and major social media venues (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, blogging).
  • Compelling photographer. Fond of spending time outdoors in all seasons.
  • Experience with social media platforms and other forms of business communications.
  • Bachelor's degree. 

Desirable: 

  • Passion for conservation.
  • Preference for a bachelor's or master's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, environmental studies, sustainability, or related fields.
  • Understanding of New England's physical, social and political landscape.
  • Visionary and creative.
  • Prior responsibility leading a social media and web-focused communications effort.
  • Growth potential within a rapidly developing organization.
