Position Overview

Provides visionary leadership and strategic planning to continue and expand the University of California's leadership role in energy and sustainability. Serves as an executive-level ambassador to other OP divisions and departments and to campus executives on behalf of the Energy and Sustainability units. 

Responsibilities  

  • Working collaboratively with the 10 UC campuses and 5 medical centers, develops system-wide strategies for energy procurement and efficient utilization;
  • Mitigates price risk for energy purchases for the University; Explores avenues for achieving the University's climate neutrality and other sustainability goals, manages the impact of carbon obligations;
  • Continues development of the University's sustainability programs throughout all relevant operational and academic areas; provides pertinent legislative and regulatory advice and represents UC's interests at the State and Federal level; Interacts with energy market groups including utilities and service providers;
  • Develops and monitors energy efficiency programs consistent with UC's sustainable practices and policy goals;
  • Creates collaborative opportunities with UC campus and medical center representatives from capital programs, real estate, planning, facilities services, transportation, procurement and other constituencies to engage in cross-functional planning, problem-solving and innovation that will lead to UC's continued status as a national leader in the fields of energy and sustainability; 
  • Creates and manages large complex system-wide energy and sustainability programs and policies through subordinate managers;
  • Collaborates with the Division of the Chief Finance Officer as well as campus and medical center leadership to establish energy- and sustainability-related strategies and goals; and
  • Establishes professional and contractual relationships with sustainability leaders, energy providers, utilities, industry leaders/ peers, and State and Federal entities. 

Qualifications  

Requirements 

  • Bachelor's Degree and or equivalent combination of education and experience. MBA or Master's Degree preferred.
  • Engineering, Sciences, Business and/or Management desired.
  • Sustainability emphasis desired (i.e., sustainability-oriented degree programs).
  • 5 - 10 years experience in energy.
  • 5 - 10 years experience in sustainable practices/policies. 
  • 5 - 10 years in an energy sales and or commodity product structuring role desirable.
  • 5 - 10 years people management and/or account management experience.
  • Demonstrated deep energy industry knowledge and experience including: energy efficiency, renewable energy, energy infrastructure, energy utilities, sustainability, climate action, energy contracting and wholesale electricity markets.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of sustainable practices and programs including renewable energy and other non-carbon sources of electricity.
  • In-depth knowledge of requirements/regulations of an Energy Service Provider.
  • Strong technical utility/ energy background with the ability to use commodities markets and futures to hedge UC's fuel and energy needs including working knowledge of CAISO and CPUC.
  • Sound financial management expertise including: Ability to develop financing scenarios for energy efficiency, renewable energy, energy infrastructure; including related maintenance initiatives.
  • Ability to drive energy and fuel acquisition plans and implement procurement strategies across the business. 
  • Ability to leverage commodity market knowledge to structure energy products that deliver energy and fuel at the lowest possible rates while managing risk.
  • Knowledge of Biogas Development, including: Real Estate development experience/knowledge, design, construction and facility operation knowledge, Contracting related to design, construction, operations and real estate, Strong negotiations skills, working knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and UC Policy. 
  • Carbon Compliance experience including: Full understanding of CARB and carbon allowance and off-set markets, a pulse on future direction of applicable regulations and facilitation of campus positions regarding carbon.
  • Equity Program Funding experience including: in-depth knowledge of potential funding sources, ability/knowledge to present comprehensive plan to demonstrate University's need over other competing interest.
  • Strong oral, written and formal presentation skills including the ability to communicate complex and technical ideas in a simple way. Able to effectively communicate to all levels of the organization and to outside stakeholders and business partners. 
  • Ability to work effectively within a political environment including the ability to use diplomacy and interpersonal skills to manage both internal and external resources to drive towards accomplishment of strategic goals. 
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and as proactive trusted advisor /thought leader.
  • Highly collaborative, must be able to develop rapport with inside personnel and outside vendors/ partners. Able to influence across the organization at multiple levels. Able to work effectively with teams as well as independently.
  • Proven experience in program and project management, including ability to provide direction, understand resource needs and successfully drive results working with direct reports and dotted line and/or internal or external resources. 
  • Positively motivates others to accomplish individual and corporate goals; provides honest feedback in a constructive way.
  • Self-motivated, assumes personal accountability for results and performance. 
  • Highly developed organizational skills with the ability to track and manage multiple, large, complex energy and sustainability initiatives across the system.
  • Experience working with a governing board. 

Preferred: 

  • Past experience with natural gas procurement preferred.
Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience.
