Position Overview

The Sustainability Analyst is responsible for coordinating the Sustainability Program, reporting directly to the Director of Corp Giving & Sustainability. This role is in charge of tracking all environmental metrics and implementing strategic actions to improve environmental performance, and is accountable for managing relationships and completing clerical tasks.

Major Responsibilities 

Analytical 

  • Collect, analyze and report monthly on Nutiva's environmental impacts (currently tracked in Excel) and progress towards our goals, including waste inventories consistent with US Zero Waste Business Council's standards, as well as energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories consistent with GHG Protocol standards.
  • Consider and evaluate transition to online database systems.
  • Continue to expand methodology and collection of Scope 3 GHG emissions.
  • Implement new programs and policies in support of strategic goals as needed.
  • Continually identify areas for improvement, especially related to database management, data accuracy and auditing, and program effectiveness.
  • Provide environmental metrics to Director for monthly Dashboard reporting, annual stakeholder reporting and certifications.
  • Assess and quantify the internal cost saving of sustainability programs and performance assessment.
  • Perform occasional research.
  • Track and keep abreast of relevant, global regulatory developments. 

Relationship Management 

  • Coordinate with vendors and staff to track metrics and manage improvement initiatives: 
  1. Ensure Production, Technical Services, Maintenance and Warehouse Departments support and comply with environmental initiatives and BCorp, USZWBC and Green Business certifications.
  2. Train production staff in procedures such as waste sorting.
  3. Coordinate with Purchasing on supporting green packaging research; help develop program to measure and improve all elements of packaging.
  4. Engage staff in initiatives, communications and volunteer events.
  • Coordinate data collection and improvement plans with co-packers, packaging vendors and bulk suppliers to improve social and environmental performance across our supply chain (this program is in its infancy stage of development). 

Administration 

  • Administratively support Director and other staff on special projects.
  • Perform administrative and planning tasks for staff events such as annual Earth Day Celebration, periodic trash audit and awards, and Innovation Sustainability Contest.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned. 

Qualifications 

Position-Specific Skills 

  • Strong interest in the organic food business, passionate about corporate citizenship and environmental stewardship, as well as Nutiva's core values.
  • Driven, results-oriented, entrepreneurial, self-starting, hands-on, adaptive attitude with a strong work ethic. 

Technical Skills 

  • Knowledge of sustainability reporting frameworks, specifically guidelines on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reporting Protocol as it relates to measuring Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. 
  • Quantitative analysis skills, proficient in unit conversions of mass, energy, volume, etc.
  • Tech savvy and comfort working with and using new software tools, expertise with Microsoft Office, advanced Excel skills are critical. 

Leadership Skills 

  • Ability to balance being an analyst with a people person (i.e., managing quantitative, analytical tasks with solving problems and managing relationships with production line workers, corporate staff, or suppliers). 

Education 

  • BA/BS degree with 4 years relevant experience, including measuring and managing environmental metrics, carbon footprint and zero waste management, supply chain management, staff engagement, or related field.
