Description
~ Connecticut's wildlife resources are managed to maintain stable, healthy populations of wildlife, including endangered and threatened species, in numbers compatible with both habitat carrying capacity and existing land use practices. ~
To support a diversity of wildlife, habitats are managed on state forests and wildlife management areas. Educational programs and technical assistance are provided to enhance privately-owned habitats and to promote an appreciation for the value of Connecticut's wildlife.
Position Overview
Three seasonal resource assistants are needed from approximately August 8, 2014, through February 1, 2015, to study dispersal, home range, mortality, and habitat use of ruffed grouse in northwestern Connecticut (Barkhamsted and Hartland).
The seasonal resource assistant will work 35 hours per week and the position runs approximately from August 8, 2014-February 1, 2015 (no more than 1,030 hours). Anticipated start date is August 8, 2014.
Responsibilities
Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Capturing and equipping grouse with radio transmitters.
- Monitoring radioed grouse.
- Vegetation sampling.
- Data entry.
- Field work will be conducted in the northwestern portion of the state - vehicle(s) for staff will be provided at a nearby DEEP facility.
- Grouse project leaders are based at the Wildlife Division's Franklin WMA office in North Franklin (eastern CT).
Qualifications
- Preferred candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in a related field. They also will be able to work independently as well as be part of a team; be able to carry and setup trapping equipment in remote locations and possess a willingness to work long hours (i.e., early mornings and late nights) in variable weather conditions.
- Candidates should have prior experience with avian capture and handling, radio telemetry, vegetation identification, Microsoft Office, and a variety of field equipment (i.e., compasses, GPS units, telemetry receivers, prisms, and 4-wheel drive vehicles.
- Must have a clean driving record.
Compensation: $10.10 to 12.00 per hour, depending on experience. No benefits and no housing provided. Holiday pay begins 3 months after start of employment.
