~ The Green Electronics Council (GEC) is a global nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire and enable responsible environmental action in the design, purchase and recovery of electronic products. ~

Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, GEC is active in 43 countries and plays an important role in shaping environmental performance in global electronics markets, mainly through its EPEAT® program.

EPEAT is the definitive global rating system for greener electronics. It is an easy-to-use resource for purchasers, manufacturers, resellers and others to identify environmentally preferable devices. The EPEAT system combines strict, comprehensive criteria for design, production, energy use and recycling with ongoing independent verification of manufacturer claims.

Principles including stakeholder engagement, independence, transparency and rigor have always guided the work of GEC and are essential elements of its success and credibility. 

Position Overview  

The organization is maturing its practices and is creating a Credibility Manager position. The position is full-time, in Portland and requires travel. Salary, benefits and time off are consistent with the job responsibilities and generous for the nonprofit sector. 

Responsibilities  

  • This position is designed to provide seamless oversight and management of a full range of credibility issues presented by GEC's programs.
  • These include efforts on assessing conformity assurance systems in relation to external performance standards, management and growth of relationships with conformity assurance partners, and alignment with external credibility systems.
  • More broadly, this team member will also share responsibility for building relationships with global sustainability certification and ratings organizations, both in and outside the electronics sector.
  • S/he will also help lead strategic discussions and work relating to the effectiveness of certification and ecolabeling standards and approaches, standard setting processes and impact monitoring/ reporting efforts. 

Qualifications 

Core requirements for the Credibility Manager include: 

  • four-year college degree, graduate degree in a relevant field preferred 
  • at least five years management experience in one or more of the following areas: standard setting processes; effectiveness of standards; conformity assurance; oversight of assurance partners; impact monitoring and evaluation. 
  • experience with collaborative efforts among organizations involved in the global sustainability standards and accreditation sector - preferably at a senior level
  • proven interest and experience in environmental causes, familiarity with environmentally preferable product definitions and initiatives ; specific understanding of green electronics sector preferred
  • ability to work with diverse ideas, proven capability in issues and conflict management
  • strong communication skills
  • a style that combines passion, persistence, urgency, patience, and an understanding of a broad range of cultures and motivations
  • ability to work happily under pressure of time, money, third-party performance and other delights of multi-party environments
  • commitment to excellence at all levels of work and to doing what needs to be done - from administrative tasks up to strategy development
  • a good spirit, work ethic, and commitment to global outcomes
