Description

~ Launched in 2008 by a partnership of major donors, ClimateWorks Foundation (CWF) is designed to provide a much-needed global, strategic, philanthropic approach to advancing public policy, inspiring the private sector, and strengthening public support for a low-carbon future. ~

CWF's services include global analysis, philanthropic strategy development and assessment, investment recommendations, convening and facilitation, grantmaking, and evaluation. CWF collaborates closely with key partners-collectively known as the CWF Network-including regional grantmaking institutions operating in China, Europe, India, Indonesia, Latin America, and the United States.

After five years of operation, the founding vision is supported by detailed strategies, institutional structures and relationships, and a track record of results. In 2013, CWF completed a new strategic plan. This plan, developed in close consultation with key funders and partners, draws on lessons learned in the first five years and anticipates challenges and opportunities ahead.

Going forward, CWF will organize its work around a handful of "big campaigns"-overarching strategies to reduce CO2e emissions by dealing with major sources systemically. Each campaign will be composed of a set of priority regional and transnational strategies.

The campaigns are as follows:

  • Clean Power Campaign: Cut unabated coal use, reduce emissions from natural gas, and shift to clean, healthy, renewable alternatives.
  • Energy Efficiency Campaign: Make economies more efficient by reducing energy waste in buildings, appliances, and industry.
  • Oil Campaign: Promote fuel economy standards, low-carbon cities, alternative vehicles and fuels, and the reduction of unconventional, high-carbon oil.
  • Forests and Land Use Campaign: Protect forests and improve land use through policies that reduce deforestation and recognize indigenous peoples' and rural communities' rights.

About the Oil Campaign

The global Oil Campaign's objective is to reduce CO2-equivalent (CO2e) emissions generated by the production and consumption of oil, consistent with the goal of limiting global warming to 2° C. More specifically, the Oil Campaign supports efforts to reduce CO2e emissions from transportation by 28 percent below business as usual by 2030 and 50 percent (~7.5 Gt CO2e) by 2050.

The Oil Campaign, coordinated by CWF, helps several large philanthropic foundations align their efforts to this end. The campaign strategy was developed over the last year in consultation with a wide range of experts and a group of leading funders. The process included analyses of oil industry economics and the strategies that the funders, including CWF, have pursued to date.

Five consensus strategies emerged: increasing fuel efficiency in vehicles, accelerating transportation alternatives (e.g., electric vehicles), transforming cities to reduce demand for car travel, challenging supply to reduce the profitability of exploration and production, and targeting communications to support these strategies and increase the will for policy change.
