Director of Organizing, Racial and Economic Justice Initiative

The New Economy Coalition (NEC) is a network of individuals and organizations interacting within a broad framework of shared objectives, open to many perspectives and ideas. Position Overview:

NEC seeks a highly capable, flexible and experienced Director of Organizing for our new Racial and Economic Justice Initiative. The position will include responsibilities for mobilizing new and existing resources to develop a new program, the Racial and Economic Justice Initiative.

This will include organizing within the existing New Economy Coalition and recruiting new members to form a coalition advisory group for the program, and supervising the execution of internally facing and externally facing components of the program including curriculum/training, re-granting and leadership development. This is a full time position with benefits.

Note: The projected start date for this position is Feburary 3, 2014.

Responsibilities:

• Work with NEC senior staff to develop a medium-term strategic plan for this new organizing program.
• Work with NEC staff to recruit new members to the Coalition to increase representation and leadership by organizations working in low income communities and communities of color, including basebuilding and campaigning organizations.
• Organize NEC member organizations, as appropriate, to participate in forming a working group for the program.
• Engage board, staff and coalition in professional development programs aimed at deepening the organization's commitment to principles of solidarity and collective liberation.
• Work with the Director of Youth and Student Organizing to develop relationships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and youth organizations in low income communities and communities of color, particularly as candidates for youth leadership in the coalition and for micro-grants.
• Work with NEC staff and partner organizations to engage new leadership in the June 2014 conference.
• Work with the Development Director to identify funding sources for the long-term sustainability of this program.
• Build the organization's network through strategic outreach to partner organizations.
• Travel to communities as appropriate to support NEC programming and build coalition relationships.
• Work with NEC communications staff to develop online outreach strategy for this new program.
• All other tasks necessary to work with staff to develop the Racial and Economic Justice Initiative.
• All other reasonable tasks as requested by the President.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Commitment to the New Economy Coalition's mission.
• Exceptional background and work experience in organizing, particularly in low income communities and communities of color.
• Excellent writing skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, both verbal and written.
• A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace.
• Flexibility and willingness to operate in a fast paced, community environment.
• Meticulous with details and facts.

Compensation: Salary will be competitive with other non-profit organizations. Commensurate with experience, salary will fall within a $42,000 to $52,000 range, plus benefits.

In the spring of 2013, we offered young people across North America an opportunity to play a role in building this New Economy. Through the New Economics Institute Campus Network Program (now the New Economy Coalition Youth and Student Network), they were invited to develop a vision for a more just and sustainable economy-and to plant the seeds that could make that vision a reality on their campuses and in their communities.

Perhaps our most important learning from the first year of our youth and student organizing work was around the need for focused and intentional engagement with low income communities and communities of color-and dedicated resources to support this engagement.

We recognize that we cannot speak about building a new economy without tackling issues of racial and economic justice head on, and we are wholly committed to aligning our personnel recruitment, staff and board development and programming to reflect this fact. To that end, the New Economy Coalition is launching a Racial and Economic Justice Initiative, a new organizing program which will enable us to develop more diverse and effective leadership for building a new economy.
