The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), a leading national nonprofit research organization based in Washington, D.C., seeks a paid temporary research assistant for its energy efficiency economic analysis research area.

ACEEE has over 25 years of experience in estimating the job creation impacts of energy efficiency. Our recent work has focused on articulating the underlying economic argument for energy efficiency jobs creation, and on describing examples of real world job creation. ACEEE acts as a catalyst to advance energy efficiency policies, programs, technologies, investments, and behaviors.

Position Overview:

ACEEE is looking for a part-time research assistant to provide support for research and program tasks for work identifying and quantifying the economic development benefits of energy efficiency policies and programs.

The position will provide an excellent opportunity for those interested in both the theory and application of economic analysis to questions of energy, energy efficiency and economic development. The successful candidate will gain extensive experience with economic modeling. The research assistant will contribute to multiple projects, perform original research, and be listed as a co-author of relevant ACEEE publications.

Timing: This is a 12-week commitment starting spring 2014. A potential for extension may exist depending upon interest and funding availability. The project will require a time commitment of 15-20 hours/week.

Duties and Responsibilities
 

  • Undertake research and analysis under the direction of ACEEE's chief economist and senior economic analyst on the relationships between energy efficiency, local economic development, and job creation
  • Assist in refining economic models to quantify the impacts on jobs and economic activity of implementing energy efficiency policies and programs 
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports, fact sheets, and other supplemental materials on the topic
  • Provide support to ACEEE program staff and other related duties as assigned including but not limited to: research, analysis, and evaluation of federal legislation and agency policies as well as identification and documentation of best practices, including policies and programs at the federal and state levels in the United States, as well as in other countries 

Skills/Qualifications
 

  • Candidate should have or be pursuing a degree in Economics. This position could be an excellent fit for a student currently working on a graduate-level thesis
  • Familiarity with input-output modelling preferred, but not required 
  • Interest in and familiarity with a range of energy efficiency policies and/or local level sustainability policies, and development economics strongly preferred
  • A strong quantitative background and proficiency with Microsoft Excel is required
  • Independent research experience is desired
  • Experience with legislation and regulatory policy research is strongly preferred
  • Strong written communication skills required
  • Self-motivation and ability to manage multiple assignments (as needed), demonstrated ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines with limited oversight
