~ SeaPlan is an independent not-for-profit organization working toward vibrant coastal economies sustained by healthy oceans and supported by best practices in ocean management. ~

Since 2006, SeaPlan has worked in partnership with government, marine-dependent industry, the scientific community, and conservation organizations. Primary practice areas include data integration and analysis, ocean use characterization, decision support tools development, stakeholder engagement and communications, indicators development and program design and management. SeaPlan is currently a team of 8 full time staff and several subcontracted professional service teams.


Position Overview:

The SeaPlan fellow position is an internship, designed to immerse graduate-level individuals in a portfolio of SeaPlan projects emphasizing science and stakeholder engagement for ocean planning. The fellow will be exposed to a broad range of topics, sectors and methods with time spent doing both field research and office based program support. Primary responsibilities will include project research, organization, and data integrity. Position is based in Boston with flexibility provided by telecommunication options. Field work takes places primarily in New England


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Project organization, research and report production with support of senior staffers
  • Assist with writing, researching, and producing content for SeaPlan white papers and news publications 
  • Assist with coordination and development of project reports and analysis 
  • Present SeaPlan materials at conferences and to stakeholder groups
  • Work with senior team to develop individual business opportunities
  • Some regional travel required

Qualifications: 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate level students working towards or recently completed a master's degree in natural or social sciences, public policy, or related field 
  • Ability to organize/prioritize workload in a fast- paced environment 
  • Ability to effectively work, clearly communicate and interact in a team environment 
  • Strong communication skills - written, oral and interpersonal 
  • Computer proficiency including command of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and data base software 
  • Knowledge of issues, trends and developments in coastal/ ocean policy, planning and management 
  • Experience translating complex information for non-technical audiences


Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with GIS 
  • Knowledge of Salesforce 
  • Experience working within government agencies or departments
  • Previous field experience in SeaPlan service areas
