Home Performance Washington is a membership organization which brings together residential energy professionals and service providers, conservation programs, educational institutions and other stakeholders to fight climate change and foster economic development by enabling a highly effective whole-house energy retrofit industry in Washington State.

Our members include a majority of companies in the state offering residential energy audits or whole house energy services in Washington, most of the educational institutions offering weatherization training, and a growing number of energy conservation programs. 

Position Overview

The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of Home Performance Washington. The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the trade organization which include: advocating for members' interests with policy makers and program managers; recruiting new members and sponsors; developing and implementing a robust fund development strategy; overseeing the human resources, legal and fiduciary business of Home Performance Washington; reporting to and coordinating Board activities and decision making.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for helping the organization achieve of its mission and financial objectives, while responding to emerging opportunities and challenges.

The Executive Director will:

  1. Assure that the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.
  2. Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the board.
  3. Work with board members and volunteers in developing key strategic relationships with likeminded and complimentary organizations.
  4. Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization's work. 
  5. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  6. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.


In communications, the Executive Director will:

  1. See that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.
  2. Along with the President and board members, participate in regular communications with Efficiency First and the Home Performance Contractors Guild of Oregon. The Executive Director is then responsible for the organization and dissemination of key agreements to the board and membership.
  3. Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.
  4. Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements and updates with community groups, utilities, local governments, and organizations.
  5. Represent the organization and its members to agencies, organizations, and the general public.


In relations to staff/volunteers, the Executive Director will:

  1. Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
  2. Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
  3. See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place.
  4. Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
  5. Maintain a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse cadre of top quality people.


In budget and finance, the Executive Director will:

  1. Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices.
  2. Work with the staff, Finance Committee, and the board in preparing a budget; see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
  3. Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.
  4. Develop and implement a robust fund development strategy.
  5. Jointly, with the president and secretary of the board of directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.
Qualifications
 
Minimum requirements:
  • Experience with volunteer organizations
  • Computer skills including use of Microsoft Office
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to respond to dynamic challenges and take initiative
  • Availability for some regional travel, and access to a reliable motor vehicle

AND

  • Journey Level status in a relevant trade AND three years' experience in fundraising, organization and management, OR
  • Associate degree AND five years' experience in management, marketing, organization, and finance, OR
  • Bachelor's degree

Preferred:

  • Master's degree
  • Experience working on volunteer boards
  • Knowledge of the home energy efficiency field is highly desired, with an interest in learning more 

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience (Full time salary range is $50,000 to $70,000. Current funding commitments covers ½-time. A portion of the Executive Director's responsibility will be to raise the other half of his/her salary.)
