~ The Environmental Law Institute (ELI), a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., is the leading center of environmental research, policy, analysis, and training in the United States. ~
Founded in 1969, ELI plays a pivotal role in the evolution of environmental law, management, and policy both in the United States and abroad. Support for the Institute comes from a mix of law firm, corporate, government, academic, and individual members as well as grants from private foundations, companies, and government agencies.
Position Overview:
For more than two decades, the bi-monthly National Wetlands Newsletter (NWN) has been serving the wetland community as the best source of accurate, timely, and in-depth coverage of wetland regulation, policy, science, and management. Recent issues discussed mitigation banking, new Supreme Court rulings, biodiversity and endangered species, sea level rise and climate change, challenges for restoration, and restoration of Gulf Coast wetlands after Katrina.
ELI seeks an energetic, self-starting, highly motivated individual to be the NWN editor. The NWN editor is responsible for soliciting and editing articles as well as laying out and producing the journal using InDesign and Photoshop.
The position is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) position with excellent benefits and vacation package.
Responsibilities:
- The editor writes summaries of recent litigation and activities in Congress as well as the editor's note.
- The editor is responsible for finding innovative ways to expand NWN subscriptions and for raising funds to support NWN.
- The NWN editor is also responsible for updating the NWN website.
- The coordinator is also responsible for updating the NWA website and seeking opportunities to increase recognition of the program within and beyond the wetlands community.
This individual will also be responsible for managing the annual National Wetlands Awards (NWA) program:
- The National Wetlands Awards honor individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to conservation and restoration of wetlands. The Awardees are honored at a ceremony held in May on Capitol Hill.
- The NWA coordinator is responsible for securing continued financial support for the program, which includes preparing proposals and submitting reports to donors, coordinating the nomination and selection process for the NWA winners, and overseeing logistics for the Awards ceremony.
Qualifications:
- Superior writing and editing skills;
- Strong understanding of wetlands science, policy, and law;
- Excellent organizational and communication skills;
- Self-motivation and creativity;
- Excellent ability to engage and communicate with constituents and the public; and
- Experience with InDesign and Photoshop is a plus.
Salary: $30,000-$35,000, with excellent benefits, depending upon experience. We also provide a great vacation package.
