The Environmental Dashboard project is an initiative designed to give Oberlin students and the community feedback on their consumption of resources.

Displayed on LCD screens, the environmental dashboard consists of three elements: a display that shows how much electricity and water is being used in the individual building in which the screen is located, a display connected to Oberlin's Municipal Light and Power System, fresh water and waster water treatment plants, and the nearby Plum Creek, which shows how Oberlin is managing its resources as a community, and a bulletin showcasing how community members are acting sustainably. 

Position Overview:

The Environmental Studies Program at Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Assistant Project Manager for Environmental Dashboard. This is a one-year, full-time Administrative and Professional Staff (A&PS) position (potentially renewable based on grant support), reporting to the Professor of Environmental Studies.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will assist in the development, management, assessment and communication of "Environmental Dashboard," a novel technological system that provides community residents with environmentally and socially contextualized real-time feedback on electricity and water flows and environmental conditions through residential and commercial buildings and through cities.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring progress on all components of the project. This includes managing and updating task lists and meeting agendas; communicating with community partners; serving as a point person for further development of content for the "Community Voices" component of the project; assisting in management of and serving as a resource for students who work on the social science portion of the project.
  • Contexts include student research assistants, students taking the "Practicum in Ecological Communications and the Oberlin Project," private readings, independent research and honors projects; playing a significant role in managing the Environmental Dashboard website and content on the digital signage; presenting the project and/or assisting in the presentation of the project in a variety of contexts to members of other communities that might be interested in replicating all or part of Environmental Dashboard; assist the faculty research team in the design, implementation, analysis and reporting on experiments associated with the project.

Qualifications:  

Requirements 

  • We seek an individual with a bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience. 
  • The candidate must have excellent organization and project management skills, strong analytical skills, strong communications skills (verbal, writing and visual presentation), a high level of responsibility.
  • The candiate also must have demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and as a member of a collaborative team; and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse segments of society ranging from city officials, members of the business community, low income communities, civic and political leaders, etc. 

Desired Qualifications 

  • Experience with: project management experience, teaching experience, website development (e.g. Word Press, HTML, pHp), photography and digital photographic processing, graphic design, statistical analysis, skills in computer hardware and programming. 

Compensation: $30,000 per year plus an excellent benefits package.
