EIA's Forest Campaign is focused on documenting and exposing illegal logging and associated trade, supporting civil society organizations to engage in forest governance reform, and coordinating with a global network of companies, trade associations, service providers, academics and NGOs to promote legal trade in wood products.

Position Overview:

The Environmental Investigation Agency is seeking a motivated, organized and committed environmentalist to join one of the most dynamic advocacy teams in Washington today.

This position works in close collaboration with the Director of Forest Campaigns and the Forest team. The Latin America Program Coordinator will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to halt illegal logging and improve forest governance throughout the region. 

Responsibilities:

The position will entail a wide diversity of activities including: 

Conduct investigations of forest related crimes, including through the analysis of trade data as well as on the ground field studies.

Collaborate with civil society partners in the region, including indigenous peoples organizations and local communities, to document illegal logging and conducting trainings in audio-visual techniques to monitor and report forest crimes and other social or environmental abuses.

Coordinate reports to funders and others, as well as production of information products to the public.

Assist in managing the budget and finances for the Latin America Program.

Organize meetings and maintaining communications with key stakeholders in the private sector, government and academia.

Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications  

  • Experience in advocacy and campaigns at the national or international level.
  • Strong demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular a collaborative and cooperative approach to work, as well as an ability to network and to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people, across a variety of settings.
  • Experience working with indigenous peoples and local communities.
  • Close attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel frequently.
  • Fluency in Spanish is required for this position; additional abilities in Portuguese desired. 

Desirable Qualifications 

  • Video production and editing skills.
  • Prior working knowledge of the wood products industry.

Since its founding in London in 1984, EIA has pioneered the use of undercover investigative techniques to expose environmental crimes and other abuses against the natural world-using its unique evidence to campaign against illegal logging, illegal wildlife trade and other environmental threats.

Highlights of EIA's achievements include instigating the 1989 global ban on international elephant ivory trade; the 1992 U.S. Wild Bird Conservation Act, limiting U.S. imports of exotic birds; an Indonesian government operation that became the biggest crackdown on illegal logging in history; a historic global agreement signed in Montreal, Canada, to phase out greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 22 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide; and most recently, a precedent-setting U.S. ban on the import and trade of illegally logged timber and associated products.
