The Fundy Marine Science Institute is dedicated to providing marine biology experiential educational programs and facilities for learning about the dynamic marine ecology of the Bay of Fundy as well as the coastal, terrestrial and human ecologies of Grand Manan Island. Our goal is to use hands-on, discovery-oriented marine science activities to increase awareness and understanding of these living systems and by extension the living systems of our oceans and planet.
The Whale Camp
Established in 1984, The Whale Camp's marine science program has had an exceptional experiential impact on hundreds of students ages ten to seventeen. The Whale Camp's hands-on programming and vibrantly personal experiences brings students face-to-face to study whales, porpoises, seals, puffins and numerous other marine and avian species in their own natural habitat. These experiences have proven to be both life-affirming and life-changing, igniting and inspiring a passionate curiosity to learn more about our ocean's and planet's life processes.
Position Overview:
Whale Camp, located on Grand Manan Island between Maine and Nova Scotia, is seeking a few highly qualified individuals to mentor campers aged 10-17 at our residential science, nature, adventure camp.
You will be responsible for co-planning and facilitating all afternoon & evening programming on a wide variety of topics including sports, new games, campfires, and environmental science. Evening program is designed to foster self-esteem and group dynamics.
You must have strong team building, group facilitation, and conflict resolution skills, and additionally, this position includes living with and supervising campers in a dormitory and managing all aspects of dorm life.
You will have free time some days from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm to explore the island while the campers are in the field and will get two 24 hour periods off during the summer. Please note that due to scheduling and program needs, some of these times may change. When not off during the day, time is to be used for curriculum development.

Responsibilities:
- Manage all aspects of dorm life: unpacking/ packing, conflict resolution, homesickness, bedtime, communications w/ parents.
- Live in dorm to manage camper behavior and keep dorms clean.
- Administer medications to the campers in your dorm that need it at breakfast, dinner and before bedtime. Record this information in the First Aid log book.
- Plan and facilitate evening programs: group sports, team building games, new games, art activities, night hikes, environmental debates and campfires.
- Plan and facilitate group initiatives and team building exercises.
- Assist with planning and facilitating orientation activities at Swallowtail Lighthouse.
- Structure the time with campers and manage student behaviors to maximize cooperation and minimize difficulties with each other.
- Structure situations to maximize safety and minimize the situations that students may be injured.
- Maintain personal first aid kit. Provide first aid as needed for injuries.
- Facilitate meals, and facilitate evening "Option Time" and organize signups at dinner.
- Be a positive role model and mentor for campers.
- Communicate with parents as requested by Directors.
- Communicate with Directors and Coordinators on a daily basis.
- Keep art supplies organized and filled.
- In charge of T-shirt sorting and distribution.
- Dispense camper money from the bank if necessary.
- Pick up and drop off mail and sell stamps to campers as needed.
- Help with general camp maintenance and running of store as needed.
- Participate in travel and transportation days as assigned.
- Supervise cleaning days and packing days.
- Assist with getting camper laundry ready.
- Responsible for set up and break down of science center as assigned.
- Complete one summer project to enhance the program. Directors must approve this project.
- Update the evening program notebook / curriculum along with the other ORD counselor.
- Maintain and display a positive and encouraging attitude at all times.
- No drugs allowed. Responsible alcohol use limited to certain locations and times.
Qualifications:
- Outdoor recreation background;
- Environmental or marine science teaching background necessary;
- Strong leadership and organizational experience;
- Ability to motivate others;
- Willingness and ability to foster self-esteem, cooperation, and responsibility in campers;
- Desire to live with and spend time with campers;
- Creativity; patience; positive and innovative attitude; strong work ethic; flexibility; and sense of humor;
- CPR/ First Aid certifications; and,
- Minimum age of 20.
Compensation: Salary is based on experience and qualifications. Room and board is provided as well as a few whale/sail trips, puffin trips and kayaking excursions.
