Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC) is one of the Southeast'smost successful and highly respected land trusts, having protected over 16,000 acres of land in the rapidly developing Triangle region of North Carolina. Position Overview:

The Director of Development will be a crucial member of the 5-person TLC leadership team with responsibility for the oversight, planning, and execution of a comprehensive annual development program which needs to grow from its current level of $950,000 to $1.5 million by 2015, as well as preparation ofthe organization for an upcoming campaign.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will build on the existing success and momentum of TLC's fundraising efforts, lead the development staff and Board of Directors to raise the support required to fund TLC on an annual basis, and help guide the organization asit pivots from a largely membership-based development program to an added emphasis on its existing major donor, foundation, public grant and corporate support efforts. 

Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes individual, foundation, corporate and special event contributions
  • Build and lead a high-performing 4+ member development team, including: a Grants, Corporate and Communications Manager, Events and Community Engagement Coordinator, Membership and Data Manager, and Development Intern(s)
  • Develop a strategy for donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
  • Build high-level, nuanced, and cultivation-focused relationships that lead to direct gift solicitations
  • More fully utilize technology to enhance fundraising efforts
  • Execute and improve existing, high value initiatives, including direct-mail campaigns
  • Develop a comprehensive private and corporate foundation plan
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, enhance Board engagement in donor identification, cultivation and fundraising activities
  • Provide oversight for annual gala and/or other high profile fundraising events (e.g. donor dinners, lectures, bike tour)
  • Support Board committees, event chairs, volunteers, consultants
  • Embody the mission of TLC and inspire donor participation on every level by promoting TLC in the community, reaching outto the media, and conducting site tours
  • Track and evaluate all fund development activities and provide regularreports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors, advising of areas of concern and providing strategies to accomplish goals
  • Work closely with program staff to support program needs, identify opportunities and really know TLC's programs and projects 

Qualifications:

  • 8 or more years of progressive fundraising, executive-level non-profit management, or related experience (or equivalent)
  • Bachelor's Degree required, advanced degree preferred
  • Broad knowledge and experience in all aspects of fundraising
  • Expertise in managing complex fundraising events
  • Proven track record of successful personnel and organizational management
  • Understanding of detailed donor and prospect segmentation for multi-phase direct mail campaigns
  • Demonstrated success in major gift solicitations from $10,000 to $100,000+
  • Knowledge of and experience with Triangle funding community appreciated, but not required
  • Excellent management experience, business acumen, judgment and integrity
  • Computer expertise in MS Office suite of products, and donor management software (e.g. TLC uses Raiser's Edge)
  • Strategic and data-driven thinker with excellent analyticalskills and ability to identify and respond to issues/opportunities in a timely manner
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while keeping a cool and controlled demeanor
  • Demonstrable skill in writing effective business correspondence and solicitation materials
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills with confidence-inspiring attitude
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to establish cooperative, tactful, effective and harmonious working relationships with co-workers, donors, committee members, volunteers, and the public
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of discretion and confidentiality with sensitive donor information
  • Comfort interacting with families from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds 

Compensation: Competitive base salary and benefits, commensurate with experience. Potential exists for performance related bonuses.
