Position Overview:
The Hawaii Fish Trust (HFT) project of the Global Marine Division within CI is seeking an ideal candidate to fill the position of Fisheries Outreach Coordinator.
Reporting to and working with the Fisheries Collaboration Manager, the Fisheries Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for contributing to and facilitating the development of collaborative initiatives with Hawaiian fishing communities with the aim of increasing fisher participation in stewardship efforts of nearshore marine ecosystems.
He/she will play a key role in sharing information on marine habitat conservation between HFT and nearshore fishermen to gain their trust and confidence. The vision of HFT is for healthy nearshore marine ecosystems, abundant fish populations, and local seafood security in Hawaii.
The position will require 25% interisland travel and occasional domestic or international travel. This position requires a flexible schedule including working numerous nights and weekends.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in projects that engage nearshore fishing community in activities related to coastal restoration or fisheries management and build partnerships between the Hawaii Fish Trust, local nearshore fishing communities, scientists, and government management agencies
- Conduct outreach activities to fishermen and nearshore stakeholders on community-based nearshore marine resource stewardship
- Explore opportunities to build collaborative relationships and share information on marine habitat conservation with fishing clubs and other local fishing related organizations
- Gather from and share information with nearshore fishermen on issues of local concern related to marine resource health and preferred solutions to those issues
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working directly with fishermen/fishing in Hawaii
- Extensive knowledge of Hawaii's socio-cultural environment including Native Hawaiian and local culture, customs and social dynamics
- Knowledge of and experience in various nearshore fishing methods and traditional fishing practices and beliefs
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Dedication to basic principles and objectives of sustainable use of marine resources
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and working collaborations across sectors
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in fisheries science, ocean policy, zoology, geography, social science, or related field degree preferred
- Research experience in fisheries science
- Experience coordinating groups of fishers in a Pacific Island context
