Oregon Home Builders Association (OHBA) is a professional, not-for-profit, trade association comprised of builders, remodelers, material suppliers, subcontractors, consultants, lending institutions, utilities and others involved in housing and building-related fields. OHBA is an affiliate of the National Association of Home Builders and has 14 local home builders associations and more than 3000 members across Oregon.

OHBA works with a variety of non-profit and governmental organizations such as Energy Trust of Oregon, Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, Oregon Building Officials Association, and Oregon's Building Codes Division to provide code training and services to contractors throughout the state.

Position Overview:

OHBA's Codes Director serves OHBA's members throughout Oregon by creating and administering building code related training to home builders, designers, remodelers, and building officials. The position is responsible for managing all aspects of OHBA's building code development, including relationships with Oregon's Building Codes Division, Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, Energy Trust of Oregon, and the building departments of Oregon's cities and counties.

Responsible to: Chief Executive Officer

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and deliver education on such topics as residential building codes, best building practices, and energy efficiency to large groups
  • Participation with Oregon's Building Codes Division, NW Energy Efficiency Alliance and other utility or stake holder groups
     o Attend meetings and support members serving on various boards
     o Prepare and submit code proposals
  • Preparation of technical comments and testimony as needed
  • Work with OHBA's government affairs staff as needed on legislative or agency code related issues
  • Participate in professional development and training programs
  • Present OHBA's stance on Code issues to partner organizations
  • Staff liaison to Codes Committee
    o Work with volunteer leadership to create agendas and meeting minutes
    o Regular communication with committee members
    o Implement committee actions
  • Partner with local HBA's and other industry partners to schedule and teach classes throughout Oregon.
    o Required travel - 20-40%
  • Generate building codes and best building practice online education
     o Develop content and format for online education for contractors in Oregon and nationwide
  • Write articles for member monthly newsletter and OHBA website
  • Create reports for OHBA and stakeholder groups as required

Qualifications:

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Knowledge of and experience with Oregon building codes, with a background in construction preferred
  • Knowledge and interest in residential building science and energy efficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to network and manage professional relationships with diverse constituencies
  • Ability to work with a volunteer executive board and successfully navigate both internal and external political environments
  • Strong background in delivering live trainings
  • Ability to develop outreach materials to inform a variety of audiences
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to effectively utilize resources, manage multiple projects and establish priorities
  • Ability to think strategically and to develop and implement operating plans
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills to convey technical and legal matters to professionals within the building industry and beyond
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (including Access, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
