The Environmental Energy Technologies Division (EETD) of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) serves as a global innovation hub for science, technology, and policy solutions to the world’s most critical energy and environment challenges. EETD’s work focuses on analysis, research, and development leading to better energy technologies and reduction of adverse energy-related environmental impacts. The Division’s core research areas include Building Technology and Urban Systems, Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts, and Energy Storage and Distributed Resources.
EETD is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, other federal entities, state governments, and the private sector. Position Overview:
EETD seeks an experienced professional to join the Division’s leadership team to drive strategic program and business development. This person will be responsible for maintaining and expanding existing research programs, as well as capturing new opportunities by building and supporting research alliances (internal and external) and coordinating development of new research proposals.
The Program and Business Development Leader will be charged with staying abreast of the changing public and private funding landscape and helping the lab remain adaptable and responsive to new opportunities. He or she will coordinate internally between principle investigators to help find areas of overlap with Division strategic priorities and/or upcoming funding opportunities.
A measure of success will be the extent to which the individual helps the Division maintain a diversified and robust funding portfolio built on strong internal coordination and long term strategic vision. Responsibilities:
The Leader, Business and Program Development, will perform the following and other duties as assigned:
- Lead program and business development activities, based on an understanding of the Division's core research competencies, funding landscape, and federal, state, and international policies.
- Evaluate and develop strategies for responding to new funding opportunities, connecting investigators with relevant funding opportunities, funders and partners, and spearheading institutional responses to broad-based solicitations.
- Facilitate the Division's internal program development strategy, including the establishment of processes to identify program priorities, screen project opportunities, and facilitate project execution.
- Represent the Division, interacting at a senior level with existing and prospective sponsors, collaborators, and partners to understand, develop, and maintain positive relations in order to maximize the flow of research dollars to the Division.
- Develop Division marketing and communications strategy, working with the Communications Office, including activities from acquisition of market research to presentations, web communications, and public information.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:
- At least 8 years work experience, as well as 5+ years and an excellent track record in energy program or business development, infrastructure/project finance, or a similar analytical, transaction-oriented position
- Strong understanding of the management of complex or large programs, with a focus on strategic planning and implementation, and the ability to integrate marketing, research, operations, and finance teams to achieve organizational goals
- Experience engaging and building relationships with senior sponsor and collaborator contacts as well as a broad array of stakeholders from industry, government, academia, foundations, and NGOs
- Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies within the Lab, to support and represent research programs, and to help staff acquire marketing skills
- Advanced understanding of the drivers for public interest energy research, including Federal and State policy frameworks, and the capacity to rapidly develop in-depth knowledge of the Division's core competencies and funding landscape
- Intellectual curiosity, resourcefulness, adaptability, and ability to move projects forward
- Excellent analytical skills and written and verbal communications skills, including public presentation and negotiating experience
- Commitment to the mission and goals of EETD
- Bachelor's in business, economics, or applicable science or engineering field, MBA preferred
