The Borneo Project brings international attention and support to community-led efforts to defend forests, sustainable livelihoods, and human rights. We believe that protecting human rights and environmental integrity in Borneo is a critical component of the global movement for a just and peaceful world. We have worked for over twenty years to help Borneo's rainforest communities protect their lands, livelihoods, and cultures for generations to come.
Position Overview:
The Borneo Project is looking for a motivated and passionate Communications and Development Coordinator to join our small team. The new hire will be 1 of 2 staff people based in the United States (in addition to the Executive Director). Because the organization is small, the new hire will be a core part of the Borneo Project team, and will have an active role in determining the direction of the organization. The new hire must be self-motivated and be able to self-direct effectively, while still be comfortable taking direction from the Borneo Project director.
Responsibilities:
Website and Online Communications Management:
- Maintain, design and develop the organization's website, updating content and adding new features.
- Ensure website is an information hub for news, reports, statements, and media about Borneo and indigenous rights world-wide. Track news coverage and spearhead rapid response activities.
- Maintain and expand social media presence - extensive use of social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flicker, etc. Research new online platforms and tools to expand the organization's web presence.
- Write and update electronic messaging and content creation of digital media including web copy, social network messaging. Maintain and frequently contribute posts to our blog.
- Produce monthly newsletter.
- Handle media for events and respond to press inquiries.
Development/Fundraising Management:
- Maintain donor cultivation, stewardship and research.
- Maintain and update supporters' donation records using Salesforce.
- Coordinate member and donor mailings.
- Coordinate local fundraising events in coordination with other staff
- Check mailbox, submit check requests and deposit donations (with our fiscal sponsor, the Earth Island Institute).
Other Duties:
- Recruit, train and supervise interns.
- Oversee creation of multi-media resources such as campaign materials, maps, fundraising packages, media toolkits, resource catalogs, and web-based documents.
- Proof reading and copy-editing Borneo Project communications and materials
- Edit video and audio files and upload and distribute them online.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should:
- Have excellent writing and editing in English
- Have excellent communication and inter-personal skills
- Have intermediate to advanced knowledge of WordPress, Salesforce, and Vertical Response platforms
- Have excellent knowledge of social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube
- Familiarity with graphic design and digital movie making a plus
- Have experience with activism, particularly climate justice, environmental justice, and human rights. The candidate should understand that creating social change often involves routine and unglamourous tasks.
- Have an understanding of/ experience working with human rights focused environmental campaigns
- Be both self-motivated and have experience working closely in a small team
- Awareness of / interest in rainforest conservation and international indigenous solidarity
Compensation: $17/hour, plus full benefits. (20 hours a week)
