FRESHFARM Markets is a 501c3 non-profit organization that operates 11 producer-only farmers markets in the Chesapeake Bay region and provides educational programs and outreach about local food and farming issues. Our mission is to build and strengthen the local food movement in the region. Our markets provide economic opportunities for farmers, enliven public places and showcase our region's agricultural and artisanal bounty.

Position Overview:

FRESHFARM Markets is looking for a full time Finance Assistant available to start immediately. We are seeking an energetic and talented individual to join our staff who is a self-starter capable of working independently, comfortable with technology, and familiar with basic accounting principles and systems. Experience working in or commitment to the fields of sustainable agriculture or local food systems is a plus.

Responsibilities:

The Finance Assistant will assume management of all financial and data tracking systems under the guidance of Co-Executive Director Bernadine Prince. Specific responsibilities as follows:

Bookkeeping:

  • Accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit card and bank statement reconciliation.
  • Provide support for annual audit and annual budget.
  • Work with bookkeeper on an as-needed basis to assist with other bookkeeping needs.

Online database management (Caspio):

  • Oversee maintenance of Caspio online database, used for reporting of market information by field staff as well as reporting of market sales by farmers.
  • Verify data entry, assemble monthly reports, and troubleshoot as needed.

Farmer Sales and Fees:

  • Use Peachtree and Caspio to track farmer sales and fees due to FFM.
  • Prepare weekly bank deposits for all farmer fees.
  • Prepare monthly reports for FFM staff and monthly statements for farmers.

Payroll:

  • Maintain employee records in online payroll system.
  • Verify monthly payroll hours for seasonal staff (via Caspio) and submit payroll.

Market Research:

  • Oversee design and implementation of annual customer surveys at markets, working with Market/Program staff and overseeing intern for the program.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years work experience, preferably with the responsibilities listed in the above section. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Experience with accounting software, Peachtree preferred.
  • Experience with online databases. Knowledge of Caspio online database a plus.
  • Strong knowledge and commitment to sustainable agriculture and related environmental issues preferred.

Position Structure/Timing: Report to Co-Executive Director Bernadine Prince.

Compensation: This is a full time position with health benefits, COLA, paid vacation, holidays and sick leave. Salary range is from $30,000 to $35,000 depending upon the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

Must be available to start in June, 2012.
