Description

Founded in 2003, Post Carbon Institute is leading the transition to a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable world. PCI and our 29 Fellows have developed a deep understanding of, and effective responses to, the interrelated economic, energy, environmental, and equity crises defining the 21st century. PCI has experience framing issues, conveying key concepts, telling stories, and supporting action among diverse audiences.

Position Overview:

Post Carbon Institute sees a talented, creative, and experienced campaign director to develop and execute our Energy Reality Campaign -- an initiative to increase energy literacy among environmental activists and the general public, and promote energy conservation as a primary strategy to respond to what Michael Klare calls "the Age of Extreme Energy."

The Energy Reality Campaign Director will serve as a contract consultant (1 FTE) for a period of 1 year.

The Energy Reality Campaign consists of 3 distinct but interrelated strategies:

  1. A publishing program that includes print and e-book versions of ENERGY: Overdevelopment and the Delusion of Endless Growth (a collection of stunning images and incisive essays, will demonstrate that human societies have become over-dependent on energy, and have turned a blind eye to the costs of our energy addiction) and a substantive report entitled "Drill, Baby, Drill?" that takes a critical look at the hype around unconventional oil and natural gas.
  2. A targeted outreach campaign, recruiting and working with grassroots environmental organizations. This international campaign includes a book-granting program for campaign partners and a training program so that campaign partners can deliver powerful presentations to the public, policymakers, and other key community stakeholders.
  3. A creative communications effort, utilizing social media, animations, a shareable image deck, and guerrilla art campaign.

Responsibilities:

The Energy Reality Campaign Director will be responsible for development and execution of all aspects of the outreach campaign and work closely with PCI's communications team on the creative communications effort. Key responsibilities include:

  • Development and execution of campaign partner recruitment, including creation of outreach materials, compiling list of organizations to contact, and conducting all communications.
  • Development and execution of book granting program, including development of Requests for Proposals, process for grantee selection, and management of logistics.
  • Development and execution of campaign partner training program, including creation of presentation and associated materials, development and coordination of training sessions, and ongoing support.
  • Project management of creative communications effort, including development of associated web sites and social media communications.
  • Depending upon level of experience, participate actively in the development and execution of guerrilla art campaign, in partnership with PCI's creative team.
  • The Energy Reality Campaign Direct will report directly to the Executive Director and work closely with the organization's Publications Director, Communications Director, other campaign consultants, and support staff.

Qualifications:

We seek a self-motivated, experienced, knowledgeable, and passionate activist who shares Post Carbon Institute's vision of a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable world, where resilient communities and re-localized economies thrive within ecological bounds. Key qualifications include:

  • Experience coordinating outreach campaigns, ideally environmental or energy-related.
  • Understanding of and passion for energy and environmental issues.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute complex, multi-faceted projects.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills, and ability to work with a diverse set of partners.
  • The ideal candidate has strong, existing contacts within the environmental community.
  • The ideal candidate has experience with developing training programs.
  • The ideal candidate has experience working internationally and/or is multi-lingual.
  • A serious sense of humor. Seriously.

Compensation: We seek a full-time equivalent consultant to work under contract for a period of one year, beginning in July 2012. This contract may be extended. The ideal candidate is located in the San Francisco Bay Area but we are willing to be flexible in this regard for the right person. Compensation is dependent upon experience.
