Greenleaf Biofuels is positioned to be one of the largest producers of biodiesel in the Northeast United States. Founded by industry pioneer, Gus Kellogg, the Company is committed to producing American made biofuels from recycled waste materials that will not only help secure our energy independence, but also provide for a cleaner environment. 

Position Overview: 

The Shift Supervisor oversees and coordinates activities of Operators engaged in manufacturing biofuel products. S/he has a leadership role in all facets of biofuel production, and works with the Plant Manager to plan and schedule plant operations.  

This role will independently, and with foresight, monitor production, quality, equipment, and the work of the Operators on his/her team. The Shift Supervisor will also work with the other Shift Supervisors, the Plant Manager and Human Resources to develop and implement SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and create training programs for Operators to ensure they are able to support optimal biofuel production safely and efficiently. Finally, this position will support ‘on call' as necessary 24 hours per day, every day of the year and adhere to Greenleaf Biofuels' drug testing program (random, for cause and post accident.)

Responsibilities:

Scheduling Jobs / Carrying out Plans:

  • Utilizes instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic formats to carryout production goals for the shift.
  • Studies schedules, and estimates time, cost, and labor to complete job assignments as efficiently and effectively as possible.
  • Sets realistic goals and is able to make plans independently.
  • Formulates plans, designs, practices, policies, methods, regulations, and procedures for production runs, operations and/or special projects.
  • Follows an ordinary routine without special supervision.
  • Assists Plant Manager with planning operations.
  • Directly supervises the work performed by vendors and/or contractors as necessary.

Monitoring Production / Operating Machinery:

  • Operates and monitors all plant control systems, computerized machinery, and equipment.
  • Makes multiple plant rounds during his/her shift to check equipment and troubleshoot potential processing problems. Takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Monitors process operating parameters and utility infrastructure operations (i.e. boilers, water treatment, vacuum system, etc.).
  • Works with Operators to assure that pressure and temperature specifications are within tolerance, and fuel batches are within standard at specified checkpoints.
  • Analyzes data for potential quality issues, or mechanical malfunctions. Handles minor issues when possible; contacts the QA Manager and/or the Maintenance Supervisor when necessary.
  • Recommends preventative maintenance or repair; undertakes minor repairs when possible.
  • Solves problems as they arise by evaluating the situation and reaching valid conclusions based on subjective or objective criteria, knowledge, past experiences, and factual data.
  • Works with and troubleshoots rotating and heat transfer equipment, and utility infrastructure (boilers, cooling tower, air compressors, vacuum system, water treatment, etc.)

Operator Leadership:

  • Leads by example and with a hands-on approach.
  • Supervises Operators to ensure plans are implemented and to manage activities.
  • Assigns work orders appropriately.
  • Directs and monitors Operators' daily work assignments, and provides assistance when needed.
  • Communicates shift change information with / between Operators on the team.
  • Continuously provides Operators with feedback Team Member's performance to support appropriate behavior and to improve and maximize employee performance.
  • Evaluates and leads employee performance reviews.
  • Ensures that Operators are following their set schedule, and maintaining regular attendance and punctuality within Company tolerances. Works with the Plant Manager and Human Resources to begin counseling if necessary.
  • Works with the Plant Manager and Human Resources to provide Operators with appropriate training; ensures that Operators are in compliance with all environmental, health and safety policies and objectives.

Reporting Functions:

  • Notifies appropriate people regarding any problems in writing at the end of the shift to track and resolve issues.
  • Provides Plant Manager with a written summary of the shift.

Nonessential Functions:

Handles various projects and activities as requested.

Qualifications: 

Education Level: 

Highschool Diploma or G.E.D.

Experience: 

2+ years of supervisory experience. 3+ years experience in a process plant environment, preferably in chemicals, biofuels or petrochemical production. 

Success Factors - Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • High ability to understand instructions and underlying principles, and carrying out detailed instructions.
  • Able to interpret a variety of instructions provided in written, oral, or in a diagrammatic manner.
  • Able to handle problems that have few concrete variables and may not be in a standardized form to make simple work-related decisions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve under pressure/deadlines.
  • Experience with developing/documenting procedures.
  • Computer proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Aptitude to learn company specific programs regarding areas such as quality control applications, and analytical machines, equipment, and tools.
  • Experience with process & equipment Controls, and computerized plant & equipment controls.
  • Able to read and understand piping diagrams, process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and other technical documents
  • Thorough understanding of safety requirements, and able to respond to normal hazards and take appropriate precautions.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • An understanding of EPA, DOT, OSHA, and state regulations commonly associated with a biodiesel manufacturing facility.
  • A valid driver's license, ability to meet minimum DOT requirements and a TWIC card (TWIC can be obtained after employment).
  • Successfully passing a drug test and adhering to drug testing program (random, for cause and post accident).
  • Adhere to standards of neatness and cleanliness.
  • Follow a set schedule, and maintain regular attendance and punctuality within Company tolerances. Must be able to work all shifts and schedules as needed, and with little notice.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and to handle competing demands with flexibility.
  • Experience working with distillation, filter presses, centrifuges, and batch reactors is a plus.
  • Experience working in a small plant environment (i.e. less than 40 people) is a plus.
  • Able to read, write and speak English fluently. Spanish a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Kneeling, stooping, bending, sitting, walking extensively and use of computer.
  • Climbing up to 65 ft.
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 20 lbs.
  • Ability to work outside in various climates and conditions.
  • Ability to manage contact/exposure to chemicals ordinarily found in a biodiesel facility.
  • Able to communicate with internal company personnel and external vendors effectively
