Western Pennsylvania Conservancy works with communities on a variety of greening initiatives including the School Ground Greening Initiative. The School Grounds Greening Initiative is working to sustain greening projects at dozens of city schools through the support of parents, students, and community residents. WPC seeks an outreach assistant to coordinate neighborhood volunteer tree plantings and the development of the School Tenders program. This position will include evening and weekend hours.
Position Overview:
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has an exciting opening for a Community Outreach Assistant for the Community Gardens and Greenspace Program. This is a full time position providing a competitive salary and excellent benefits. It reports to the Senior Director, Community Gardens and Greenspace Program. It is based primarily in Pittsburgh, PA, with travel to schools in the Pittsburgh area as needed. Some evening and weekend work will be required.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate efforts to sustain school grounds greening projects at 60+ city schools including:
- serving as key contact for participants in the School Tenders project
- recruiting and coordinating volunteers to sustain school sites
- providing training and information as needed to project participants
- managing data input for all school greening efforts
- interfacing with principals, parents and community members as needed
- coordinating tasks with other staff monitoring and supporting school sites
Additional duties include:
- Ordering all supplies and materials such as soil and mulch for community planting for school greening sites and caretaking events.
- Coordinating tool and staff needs for community plantings and caretaking.
- Assisting with documentation of projects at all stages.
- Collecting and processing all data related to school ground greening.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a bachelor's degree or relevant experience.
- Interest in urban environmental work
- Experience with volunteer coordination
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to help communicate WPC's project goals and procedures to a variety of constituents, including colleagues, community members, government agency staff, and vendors
- Ability to work independently on complex tasks
- Ability to work well in a team setting and integrate school greening into the full Gardens and Greenspace program agenda
- Proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel; willingness to learn other software programs as needed.
