CORAL's mission is to unite communities to save coral reefs. We provide education, tools, and inspiration to help local communities become passionate environmental stewards of the reefs. Together, we develop well-managed marine protected areas and sustainable businesses to benefit coral reefs and people.

Position Overview:

The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) is looking for a temporary, part-time writer and editor (4-month Position) to join our team. With direction from the Development Director, this individual will implement aspects of the organization's strategic communications program, which is designed to effectively describe and promote CORAL and its conservation work to supporters, funders, board members, the general public, and the media.

The communications program comprises internal communications, public and media relations, website content development and management, electronic and print publications, creation of brochures and marketing collateral, and management of the communications archives and photo/video databases. This position is expected to require approximately 20 hours per week and last through mid-July.

Responsibilities:

  • Write, edit, and produce diverse communications, including press releases, quarterly print newsletter, monthly electronic newsletter, annual calendar, and brochures and marketing collateral.
  • Create and manage web content for www.coral.org and liaise with conservation programs on content development for ancillary websites.
  • Edit or proofread proposals, grants, and written materials produced by other staff.
  • Manage public relations through development and delivery of positioning and messaging to enhance the visibility of the organization and increase donations.
  • Assist staff in the creation of external communications pieces, including PowerPoint presentations, speeches, articles, written publications, workbooks, press releases, etc.

Qualifications:

Minimum education required:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree, preferably in communications, public relations, journalism, new media, or related area.

Minimum experience required:

  • 5 years of public relations, journalism, writing, or related experience.
  • Experience producing print publications, including project management, principles of design, print buying, and proofing.
  • Prior experience managing multiple projects with considerable deadline pressure and constantly shifting priorities.
  • Experience managing and supervising part-time staff and volunteers.

Specific knowledge, skills, or abilities required:

  • Flawless proofreading and editing skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to write clearly, persuasively, and effectively within the established tone of the organization in a variety of written and electronic formats.
  • Ability to translate proposals, reports, and interviews into compelling stories that motivate programmatic and funding commitments.
  • A passion for coral reefs and ocean conservation.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for up to 8 hours per day.
