Description

Washington Wilderness Coalition protects and restores wild lands and waters in Washington State through advocacy, education and civic engagement.

Position Overview:

The Conservation and Outreach Associate is responsible for providing leadership for all grassroots organizing efforts and plays a significant role in WW's outreach to new conservation voices (i.e. hunters, anglers, faith leaders, businesses) and local stakeholders. The position is a key member of the conservation department and works closely with the Conservation Director to implement WW's program goals. This position is the conservation lead for production of WW's quarterly print and monthly online newsletters, updates conservation content on the web site and social media, and supervises conservation interns.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Conservation Director to implement campaign strategies.
  • Coordinate with senior management team to move WW's longer-term strategic plans forward, and to anticipate and respond to internal and external opportunities and challenges.
  • Lead efforts to mobilize WW members and activists on conservation issues through action alerts by e-mail, web site, postcards, temporary field organizers, activist events and relevant public hearings.
  • Draft, edit and review all grassroots materials produced for WW and/or WW coalition.
  • Document and maintain records of past and current grassroots calls to actions
  • Lead WW efforts to garner local stakeholder support for specific proposals or campaigns.
  • Assist Conservation Director in establishing and enhancing relationships with new conservation voices i.e., hunters, anglers, faith leaders, local officials, businesses, etc.
  • Write and pitch editorials and letters-to-the-editor on targeted conservation issues in papers
  • Work with Membership and Conservation Director to produce quarterly print newsletter and monthly electronic newsletter.
  • Supervise 2-3 conservation interns and service learners each quarter.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate for this position will be someone who has:

  • Ability to work with a wide variety of individuals, including local stakeholders, donors, community leaders, government officials and volunteers
  • Demonstrated initiative and entrepreneurial style, with the ability to work both independently and as part of an effective team.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously as needed
  • Well-organized, thorough and attentive to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrates a professional attitude
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, publisher, outlook and databases (esp. E-Base)
  • Demonstrates commitment to the mission to protect Washington's wild lands and waters.
  • Can pass a basic background check

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in environment science, conservation or related subject
  • 2 years work experience, in conservation a plus
  • Experience in grassroots organizing, campaign and political strategy
  • Knowledge of wild lands conservation issues is a plus.
