Position Overview:
In 2009, Audubon Sharon began an initiative to protect forest habitat in northwest Connecticut for bird species of conservation concern. This initiative included the identification of large priority blocks of forest habitat and outreach to forest landowners regarding the importance of forest management for breeding songbirds and as migratory stopover points. In working with state wildlife agencies and other organizations on this initiative it became clear that more data was needed regarding the occurrence of bird species in these priority forested blocks.
The purpose of this seasonal position is to collect data on the occurrence of bird species of conservation concern in forested habitat of northwest Connecticut. This seasonal position runs mid-May through July.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct bird counts primarily in forests at points located by map and gps. After an initial training period, the seasonal will work independently and part of a team to collect and compile data from forest plots randomly distributed through Northwest Connecticut. The work requires that the seasonal be at the first counting area by sunrise.
- Conduct basic vegetation surveys in forest plots. Potentially installing and maintaining Automated Recording Units to record bird songs at select sites.
Qualifications:
- Ability to follow protocols and identify Connecticut's breeding birds by sight and sound
- Excellent hearing and birding skills, and ability to read and follow topo maps and GPS unit are required
- Atlasing or point count experience a plus
- Candidate must be self-motivated and able to perform fieldwork with a minimal amount of supervision
- Hiking/orienteering skills are a plus
- A valid driver's license, personal vehicle, proof of auto insurance, and binoculars are required.
Compensation: $8.25-$10.00/hour plus housing.
