Description

With more than 200 communications professionals in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Seattle and New York, GMMB is a full-service communications agency offering strategy, public relations, partnership development, advertising (creative, media planning and media placement), branding, graphic design, broadcast production, digital engagement, grassroots outreach and coalition building.

Position Overview:

The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) is launching a statewide energy efficiency outreach and education campaign in early 2012. GMMB, the communications firm responsible for implementing the campaign, is hiring a field organizer based in the Westchester/Mid-Hudson region who is passionate about energy efficiency to conduct community-based outreach and education as part of the integrated campaign. This position would start as soon as possible and be part time through April 2012, with the option of renewal through October 2012 and possibly beyond.

The goal of the campaign is to educate New Yorkers about energy use, simple actions they can take to eliminate energy waste and available state and utility energy efficiency programs (rebates, tax credits, etc.). The field organizer, managed by GMMB, will recruit and work primarily with community-based organizations (CBOs) and grassroots organizations reflective of ethnic, socioeconomic and regional diversity, with special focus on low-income, senior and environmental justice communities.

Responsibilities:

The job responsibilities of the field organizer will include:

  • Building and managing diverse, sustainable local coalitions (working groups) with community-based organizations and grassroots organizations that represent the campaign's priority audiences
  • Establishing relationships and coordinating with key campaign partners, including, but not limited to PSC, NYSERDA, local utility company representatives and other key stakeholders in the region
  • Identifying and reaching out to a diverse set of community-based organizations and grassroots organizations to engage in the campaign
  • Connecting community-based organizations to energy efficiency programs available to their members/networks
  • Promoting the campaign website through outreach materials, campaign trainings and other events
  • Working with GMMB to coordinate and organize earned media events and activities in their regions around the campaign launch
  • Coordinating local activities and events that support the statewide campaign activities (such as paid advertising, social media, public relations and publicity)
  • Maintaining a database of community-based organizations that you reach out to, as well as organizations that get involved in the campaign
  • Disseminating campaign materials to community-based organizations
  • Connecting organizations to energy efficiency education resources and trainings
  • Recruiting and training CBOs to attend community events and disseminate information about the campaign to their members and networks
  • Conducting energy efficiency education presentations for CBO leaders, their members and their networks
  • Participating in regular conference calls with GMMB and PSC and preparing regular updates and a final operational report
  • Monitoring progress and adjusting strategies as needed

Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in field organizing, partnership building, issue advocacy and/or coalition building
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and mobilize community-based and grassroots organizations in support of public interest campaigns; connections to priority communities in the regions are a plus
  • Experience in organizing and managing diverse coalitions
  • Knowledge of the local market and familiarity with community resources in sectors such as business, education, senior, environmental justice, and low-income and diverse communities
  • Experience planning events, including press events, community forums and workshops
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency/environmental issues is a plus
  • Dependable, detail oriented and well organized - able to multi-task, meet deadlines and adapt to the changing priorities of the campaign
  • Strong computer, public speaking and written communication skills, including a grasp of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, as well as familiarity with data/list management

Perks for this position include working in the community rather than in an office setting, having a non-traditional work schedule (which may include evenings and weekends) and a casual/business casual dress code depending on the situation. Field organizers will need their own transportation to get to events, ability to produce and transport relevant hard copy materials (no heavier than 25 pounds), and have access to the Internet, a computer and cell phone.

This is a contract position with GMMB on behalf of PSC. Funding levels are subject to change and may impact the scope of work for this position.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience.

Application deadline: Friday, December 9.
