Position Overview:
Reporting to the Associate Director of HS&E, the successful candidate will assist line management in ensuring full health and safety compliance coverage.
- The candidate will provide direction/leadership/expertise on matters of Health and Safety including interpretation of regulations & Novartis requirements, knowledge of best practices, and formulation of strategies to provide pragmatic solutions.
- Development of programs and training to enhance the awareness of on-site personnel is a key part of the position, as is maintaining frequent contact with staff members and research associates at all levels to ensure issues are addressed in a timely manner.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the establishment and maintenance of training programs/systems to ensure Health and Safety compliance requirements (OSHA, NIH, NRC, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, CDC, NFPA, etc) and best practices relevant to all research activity and operations at NIBR Cambridge.
- Provide leadership in the development of novel adult learning approaches designed to increase the awareness of radiation, chemical, biological and general safety practices.
- Work with other HSE staff in the development and implementation of policies and procedures and training programs to assure compliance with local, state and federal standards, regulations (e.g. MA DEP/DPH, OSHA, NIH, CDC, NFPA, EPA, etc), Novartis Guidelines and best practices relevant to all research activity and operations at the facility.
- Assist in the development of guidelines, SOPs, procedures & practices for required health and safety work practices (fire safety, confined space, lock-out-tag-out, machine guarding, etc.).
- Assist in the collection and analysis of Leading Indicator information and the management of applicable databases for ensuring Health and Safety regulatory compliance and recordkeeping.
- Monitor the status of the facility inspection and audit programs to detect existing or potential safety, health, and environmental hazards, and assure that adequate corrective or preventative measures are implemented.
- Manage the consolidation, entry, and submission of all required data into the Corporate Data Management System, energy project tracking and monitoring.
- Act as liaison with Facility Operations group on matters of Health and Safety.
- Provide expertise to Campus Development group regarding construction safety.
- Maintain contractor management database.
- Work with onsite contractors to ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations.
Qualifications:
- Minimum: B.S. degree in Occupational Health and Safety, or related field plus 5 or more years of HSE experience or an Advanced degree plus 3 or more years of HSE experience.
- Experience in research laboratory environment.
- Team approach to identification and resolution of issues.
- Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
- Strong teaching and training program development skills are essential.
- Relevant professional certifications are a plus.
- High level of effectiveness in a changing, fast-paced environment. Ability to work independently, take initiative, and make improvements in the department. Understanding and focus on client needs.
