Greater Newark Conservancy promotes environmental stewardship to improve the quality of life in New Jersey's urban communities. Founded in 1987, the Conservancy has four program areas--environmental education, community greening and gardening, job training and advocacy for environmental justice.

Greater Newark Conservancy in Newark, New Jersey, is currently seeking an Environmental Education Instructor to conduct environmental education programs for this urban-based environmental and horticultural non-profit organization.

Position Overview:

Environmental Education Instructor will provide hands-on, interdisciplinary learning experiences for urban youth at our Prudential Outdoor Learning Center (OLC) and in select Newark schools. The OLC has 10 garden galleries where environmental education programs are conducted. OLC galleries include pathways leading past flowering trees and shrubs, a sundial amphitheater, a pond with a cascading stream, and demonstration vegetable gardens.

The Environmental Education Instructor will conduct programs at Conservancy Living Laboratories - school based gardens located throughout Newark. Environmental Education Instructor will assist in the supervision of high school summer interns, provide programming at Conservancy festivals, and conduct outreach community programs.

The Environmental Education Instructor has a regular schedule of 40 hours/week. Evening and weekend hours required as part of this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct lessons in Greater Newark Conservancy's Prudential Outdoor Learning Center
  • Conduct school garden environmental education programs at local schools
  • Conduct environmental education programs appropriate for community groups and youth organizations
  • Maintain statistical records and student and teacher program evaluations
  • Assist in the supervision of high school summer interns

Population:

  • The primary population consists of students, grades Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade.
  • The Educator will conduct programs for adults, including teachers and parents.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in education, environmental studies, or related field
  • Valid driver's license / own auto required
  • Must be able to work outdoors and perform gardening tasks
  • Experience in formal or informal teaching preferred
  • Familiarity with environmental education preferred
  • Basic Horticulture knowledge preferred
  • Must be comfortable working with a diverse population
  • Organized, detail-oriented, functions well under pressure
  • Strong writing, communication and computer skills
  • Motivated, Outgoing and Friendly
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs
  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese helpful
