Xanterra South Rim, L.L.C. is the primary in-park Concessionaire for Grand Canyon National Park South Rim, overseeing Food, Lodging and Retail operations.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Environmental Affairs Director, the ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST assists with and coordinates multiple environmental programs and projects related to compliance and environmental stewardship at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.
Responsibilities:
- Review and update environmental programs and manuals including ISO 14001 program documentation. Analyze for effectiveness and improve environmental projects, including sustainable operating initiatives and cost impacts.
- Conduct regular environmental inspections of Xanterra facilities, develop and implement corrective or preventative action plans to address any issues found.
- Serve as Hazard Communication Program Coordinator, including responsibility for MSDS evaluations and maintenance of the MSDS master file.
- Work closely with EA Director to ensure compliance with all NPS, state, and federal environmental statutes and regulations including: SPCC, asbestos, RCRA and hazardous waste, UST/AST, Universal Waste, CFC’s/Halons, lead-based paint, storm water management, hazardous materials storage, and fuel dispensing compliance. This includes providing training to staff of regulatory changes affecting operations.
- Responsible for tracking and inspections as required under certain programs (e.g. RCRA, UST, SPCC, etc.). Maintains documentation on environmental permits, waste transportation manifests, and annual environmental reporting.
- Serve as company Hazardous Waste Coordinator.
- Develop and implement employee and guest environmental education with a variety of media, including writing bi-weekly environment article for employee newsletter.
- Develop and conduct training as needed, including General Orientation.
- Oversee environmental (Green Team) committee by facilitating regularly scheduled meetings and ensuring the team sets and achieves goals and objectives.
- File and analyze results of monthly reports of comment cards as they relate to environmental issues.
- Research best available technologies and equipment advancements that relate to Xanterra operations.
- Develops and maintains a positive and productive relationship with the Xanterra department directors and staff personnel, compliance agencies and others.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in environmental or related technical field and/or 3 years experience in environment-related field.
- Experience implementing an ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System or similar program.
- Ability to creatively problem solve in a unique work environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills in working with a diverse workforce.
- Knowledge of applicable regulatory agency codes and standards.
- Professional verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated competency with Microsoft Office and/or similar applications
- Good organizational skills and ability to work with minimum supervision to complete assigned tasks in a timely and professional manner.
- Possess or obtain a valid Arizona Driver’s License and comply with the Xanterra Company Vehicle Policy.
