Description

The Center for Sustainability Education helps make the study of the environment a defining characteristic of a Dickinson education. Established in 2008, the center works to integrate environmental and sustainability education across the college curriculum. It also links classroom learning with co-curricular programs, the greening of campus operations and civic engagement.

Position Overview:

The Sustainability Education Coordinator will coordinate and support programs to advance sustainability learning at Dickinson College, lead selected curricular and co-curricular initiatives, supervise and mentor student interns, and develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for communicating sustainability-related activities and achievements of Dickinson College to internal and external audiences. Exceptionally qualified and experienced candidates will be considered for appointment at the Assistant Director grade.

Applicants should have a thorough understanding and familiarity with sustainability in higher education.

Responsibilities:

Education, Scholarship and Research:

  • Coordinate and support existing programs and help develop new programs that expand and enrich opportunities for sustainability learning, scholarship and research;
  • Act as a resource person to assist faculty in integrating sustainability into their teaching and develop a sustainability resource library;
  • Help organize faculty workshops and other professional development programs that enhance faculty competencies for interdisciplinary teaching about sustainability;
  • Work with other CSE staff and college employees to organize and support hands-on living laboratory experiences and informal educational opportunities that support sustainability learning goals; and
  • Manage small grant programs that support sustainability related teaching, professional development, scholarship and research projects.

Campus Culture and Community Engagement:

  • Collaborate with other campus actors to help plan and implement a variety of events and programs that engage students, faculty, staff, administrators and members of the surrounding community in activities that strengthen a culture of sustainability;
  • Lead programs for orientation of new students and training Residential Life staff and Orientation Assistants;
  • Work with other CSE staff to support our existing Eco-Reps program and develop a new Eco-Audit program;
  • Assist with development of projects for student sustainability interns and supervise student interns;
  • Support efforts to develop mutually beneficial relationships with student, alumni, community and professional organizations, peer institutions, and higher education associations.

Communication Strategy:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive, multimedia strategy for communicating sustainability-related activities and achievements of Dickinson College to internal and external audiences that uses the web, listservs, social media, electronic and print media, webinars, and public events in innovative ways; and
  • Improve and maintain the CSE website and design, develop content for, and oversee production of newsletters, posters, brochures, flyers and other outreach materials.

An applicant hired at the Assistant Director grade would have additional responsibilities that include assisting with overall direction of CSE programs, strategic planning for the Center, and supervising and mentoring other CSE staff. 

Qualifications:

Qualifications for Coordinator level appointment include:

Understanding of environmental, societal and economic dimensions of sustainability gained through education and experience; 2 or more years experience supporting development and implementation of interdisciplinary sustainability education and co-curricular programs in a higher education environment; proven skills for the design and development of websites, social media tools, online and print newsletters, outreach materials, and educational materials; good writing and editing skills; experience supervising student interns or volunteers; strong interpersonal skills for working with students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and community members; computer and IT literacy, including the ability to work efficiently with website publishing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet and database applications.

Additional qualifications for appointment at Assistant Director level:

3 or more years experience in a leadership role developing and implementing interdisciplinary sustainability education or co-curricular programs at a college or university. 

Physical Demands:

Occasional light lifting; participation in outdoor activities with students; ability to drive a college vehicle for field trips.
