Description

Wise Energy for Virginia (WEFV) is a dynamic coalition, made up of five leading environmental groups in Virginia - Appalachian Voices, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Sierra Club - Virginia Chapter, Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards, and the Southern Environmental Law Center. WEFV is committed to securing a clean energy future for Virginia. Our mission is to stop the expansion of dirty energy sources in the Commonwealth, promote clean and affordable energy that will protect our mountains and southwest Virginia communities from mountaintop removal coal mining, invigorate the economy by creating jobs that cannot be exported, and commit the Commonwealth to science-based reductions in global warming pollution.

Our immediate focus is our campaign against Old Dominion Electric Cooperative's (ODEC) proposal to construct and operate a 1500-megawatt, conventional-style, coal-burning power plant in Surry County, Virginia. If built, the ODEC power plant would be a major new source of air, water, and global warming pollution for decades to come. It would be the single-largest coal-fired power plant in Virginia, and would be located approximately 30 miles from the one of the world's most biologically diverse estuaries, the Chesapeake Bay.
