Description
The Solar Heat Specialist position is integral to the Conservation Corps' and Rural Renewable Energy Alliance's goal of reducing fuel poverty within the state.
Position Overview:
The Conservation Corps Solar Heat Specialist is an AmeriCorps position stationed with the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance (RREAL) in Pine River, Minnesota. RREAL delivers solar air heat to low-income families on energy assistance (LIHEAP) as a lasting solution to fuel poverty. Solar Assistance fosters ecological health, social equity, and self-reliance while providing families with decades of renewable, domestic energy.
The Solar Heat Specialist will assist RREAL in carrying out its Solar Assistance program; perform Solar Air Heat system installations; facilitate Conservation Corps crew trainings; and conduct community outreach and general project management.
Responsibilities:
- Receive extensive hands-on training in Solar Heat installation under the direction of RREAL.
- Assist in analyzing homes and qualifying solar system candidates in various communities throughout the state.
- Collaborate with Community Action Programs and housing agencies.
- Educate the public about solar installations in their communities.
- Teach Conservation Corps members about solar system design, requirements and installation.
- Lead Conservation Corps members in solar installations.
- Facilitate field coordination in cooperation with Conservation Corps regional staff, ensuring that projects are accomplished in an efficient, safe, and consistent manner.
- Assist with reporting and data collection.
- Perform overnight and weekend travel as required.
Qualifications:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work well with minimal supervision, multi-task and be flexible in responsibilities.
- Previous experience in a leadership role with proven ability to motivate, supervise, and train 18-25 year-old crew members and crew leaders.
- Positive attitude and interest in service and community work.
- Experience/knowledge of renewable energy practices.
- Experience with hand and power tools, basic carpentry and mechanical skills.
- Experience developing and facilitating trainings.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
- Previous Conservation Corps experience is preferred.
- 4-year degree in a related field is preferred.
- AmeriCorps eligibility required (members are eligible to enroll in 4 terms of service in a State and National AmeriCorps program, but can only earn the value of 2 full time education awards).
Compensation: Monthly stipend of $1975 (pre-tax), health insurance (monthly premium paid by the Corps), post-service AmeriCorps education award of $5,350 that may be used for college expenses or to repay qualified student loans, loan forbearance during the service term and interest accrual payment at term end. Personal protective equipment and uniform is provided.
Location: RREAL Headquarters in Pine River MN
Schedule: Full-time, temporary (10 months) Mon-Fri. 40 hrs per week
Start Date: 2/7/2011
End Date: 12/15/2011 with option to renew
