Position Overview:
Seeking a communications specialist with 2-4 years experience for a Long Beach-based position to assist on labor and environmental advocacy efforts at both the local policy and federal legislative levels. This is a full-time staff position in a challenging, fast-paced campaign setting that is funded through the end of the year, with likely option to renew or be reassigned to other progressive projects. Candidates for campaign jobs must be willing to work long or irregular hours at key moments.
The Communications Specialist will be formally employed by consultancy firm, Maynard Consulting Services, which supports the campaign's communications efforts. S/he will work closely with the campaign's senior communications officers and Communications Director, as well as other political and research staff, to help implement various tactics and strategies on behalf of Change to Win, a key partner in a dynamic nationwide coalition tackling poverty and pollution at U.S. ports. S/he will be responsible for maintaining and expanding the campaign's online presence, drafting content, and other communications support tasks, as assigned.
Responsibilities:
Specific duties may include:
General Communications Work:
- Edits or drafts communications materials such as e-blasts, media advisories, literature pieces
- Prep campaign spokespeople and use video and new media tools to move key messages
- Assist with pitching media and bloggers for events and respond to requests
- Coordinates mailings and events.
Communications Support & Administration:
- Track and organize media clips.
- Provides support to build and maintain targeted media lists
- Assists with daily campaign activities including reporter research requests, gathering materials, assembling press materials.
Website Maintenance & Development:
- Assists in maintaining the website by creating, updating, and developing web content.
Social Networking:
- Helps maintain and grow organizational presence on Facebook and Twitter.
Qualifications:
- Strong written, creative and interpersonal communication skills in a multi-organizational, high-pressure environment.
- Experience on social networks a must; experience producing content for social networks and/or blogs and other electronic media a plus.
- Strong organization skills, internet research and attention to detail a must.
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize and perform a wide variety of tasks over the course of the workday.
- Motivation, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
- Analytical, organizational, and general office skills.
- Strong computer competency; proficiency in Word and Excel.
- Familiarity with web content editing.
- Basic HTML skills.
- Familiarity with database, desktop publishing, and/or graphic design applications a plus.
- Interest in and/or knowledge of unions, environmental/public health social justice and/or progressive policy issues.
- Bilingual candidates (Spanish/English) are strongly encouraged to apply.
- CA Driver's License and reliable automobile transportation required for this position.
Compensation: $40,000-$50,000 plus full benefits.
