Earthjustice, established in 1971 as the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, is an independent, non-profit law firm serving the environmental movement. Our mission is to protect natural resources and public health by enforcing and strengthening environmental laws and providing clients with the best legal representation and related advocacy.
Since our inception, we have been involved in many of the nation's most important environmental battles and have established valuable precedents in cases involving air and water quality, endangered species, forestry, public lands, and international environmental law.
Earthjustice has its administrative headquarters in Oakland with regional litigation offices in Bozeman, Denver, Honolulu, Juneau, Seattle, headquarters and the International Program located in Oakland, New York, Tallahassee, and Washington, D.C.
Position Overview:
The associate attorney opening is for a 2-year position to be filled by a lawyer with at least 1 to 2 years of litigation or judicial clerkship experience. This attorney will work with the Vice President for Litigation, who oversees the litigation program and works closely with the regional offices and seven practice groups, which cover public lands, wildlife, global warming, health, air, water, and oceans.
The attorney will staff practice group strategic planning efforts, conduct research to develop cutting-edge legal strategies to address burgeoning environmental problems in conjunction with practice group chairs or the VP for Litigation, and assist with coordination of litigation and program development across regional offices and practice groups.
Qualifications:
Applicants for the associate attorney program should have strong academic credentials. Excellent research and writing skills also are essential. Moot court, law review, or other advocacy and writing experience is helpful. Applicants should have a strong work ethic and sense of initiative, and sound judgment. A demonstrated commitment to public interest law and familiarity with environmental and/or administrative law are preferred. Associate attorneys also manage the hiring and supervision of student law clerks.
Compensation: Starting pay is $53,500 to $55,500 depending on experience, with excellent benefits.
