Xanterra Parks & Resorts is the nation's largest park concessions management company. Our operations span the country from the lush wilderness of Ohio's state parks to the magical desert of Death Valley.

Our desert oasis resort is located 120 miles NW of Las Vegas, NV and 275 miles NE of Los Angeles, CA. in Death Valley National Park.

Position Overview:

Responsible for all matters of environmental affairs at Xanterra Parks and Resorts'® operations in Death Valley National Park. Refine, implement, and maintain the environmental management system (EMS) and oversee all environmental programs.

Responsibilities:

Environmental:

  1. Implement, refine, and maintain the written environmental management system consistent with the ISO 14001 international EMS standard, as well as National Park Service (NPS) standards, working in conjunction with the Xanterra Corporate Vice President of Environmental Affairs, the Death Valley Regional General Manager, all Death Valley employees, and pertinent government agencies.
  2. Directly oversee operation of the wastewater treatment plants at Furnace Creek. This includes direct management of wastewater personnel, regular reporting to pertinent agencies, regular inspections of the plants, and ensuring operation of the plants within regulatory requirements.
  3. Develop, implement and maintain Xanterra's Ecometrix (resource-tracking) systems at the Death Valley operations.
  4. Provide oversight and ongoing performance evaluations of the environmental management system and the NPS Concessions Environmental Audit Protocol in coordination with the General Manager, the Xanterra Vice President of Environmental Affairs, and the NPS.
  5. Work with the Death Valley Regional General Manager and the Xanterra Vice President of Environmental Affairs to establish and maintain standards for departments in conservation and environmental goals in areas such: 
    - Solid waste management
    - Energy and water efficiency of operational systems (including renewable energy)
    - Pollution prevention and waste reduction
    - Sustainable design and construction practices (including the LEED rating system)
    - Hazardous materials and waste management
    - Air emissions control
    - Environmental communication and education
    - Comprehensive affirmative procurement strategies, and 
    - Underground and aboveground storage tank (fuel dispensing and storage management) compliance.
  6. Develop an environmental stewardship committee; hold regularly scheduled meetings and establish goals and objectives for the committee.
  7. Work closely with the Death Valley Regional General Manager, Vice President of Environmental Affairs, and corporate General Counsel to ensure compliance with all NPS, state, and federal environmental statutes and regulations including but not limited to: SPCC, asbestos, RCRA and hazardous waste, UST/AST, Universal Waste, CFCs/Halons, lead-based paint, wastewater management, hazardous materials storage, and fuel dispensing compliance. This includes providing training to staff of regulatory changes affecting operations.
  8. Analyze for effectiveness and improve Xanterra's Death Valley environmental projects, including sustainable design, renewable energy, and energy efficiency initiatives and cost impacts.
  9. Measure impact of programs and prepare required reports for Xanterra at Death Valley, Xanterra's Vice President of Environmental Affairs and National Park Service Concessions Management.
  10. Manage the Furnace Creek Chevron Station. This includes direct oversight of personnel, purchasing, and all station operations. This also includes full P&L oversight for station. Work with fuel distributor to ensure safe delivery of fuel, set fuel prices, and keep station in compliance with Chevron quality standards.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Health, or related field.
  2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in technical writing and public speaking.
  3. Experience with EMS development, ISO 14001 certification, and environmental auditing.
  4. Well-developed information systems management skills.
  5. At least 3 years of environmental management experience.
  6. Experience in developing environmental initiatives and implementing all phases of a company-wide environmental program.
  7. Proven analytical skills in assessing cost effectiveness, cost savings, program effectiveness and program compliance.
  8. Well-developed management information systems skills.
  9. Possess or able to obtain a valid Driver's License.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperatures.

Compensation: Salary of $40-45k. Free company housing, free utilities, free meals and golf. Position is full time/year round. We also offer medical, dental & vision insurance, 2 weeks paid vacation after 1 year, 8 paid holidays per year and 6 paid sick days per year, 401k plan and bonus potential.
