The Toronto Renewable Energy Co-operative (TREC) is an incorporated, not-for-profit organization that has been working for more than 10 years to develop co-operatively owned renewable energy projects in Ontario and to educate about renewable energy, conservation, and the community power model.

TREC planned and built North America's first urban-sited wind turbine in partnership with Toronto Hydro. TREC then established the Windshare Co-operative to jointly own and operate the turbine with Toronto Hydro. The Our Power project is a Community Solar Program that has resulted in the installation of more than 100 residential solar PV systems generating over $2 million of business for Ontario solar companies. With new opportunities under the Green Energy Act, Our Power is establishing itself as the "HUB" of homeowner solar energy growth in the GTA and Ontario, by providing a compelling meeting place and business exchange that addresses all homeowner purchasing needs and delivers buying leads to our industry Partners.

Position Overview:

The Toronto Renewable Energy Co-operative (TREC) is looking for a motivated, effective and capable individual to assist the development of its residential solar marketing and customer support program.

Our Power offers homeowners a clear outline of the costs and benefits of an investment in a residential solar PV (electric) installation through an online site assessment customized for their home. By giving non-biased advice about this significant investment and partnering with reliable vendors, Our Power intends to establish confidence among homeowners that will lead to significant installations and speed Ontario's transition away from fossil-fuelled, peak power generation.

Duration: 5 months, full time (April-August)
Start date: April 12, 2010

Responsibilities:

  • Completing customized online site assessments of the solar PV potential of residential rooftops in Ontario using a suite of online tools; 
  • Responding to email questions from homeowners interested in solar power;
  • Developing a social marketing campaign for a community solar event; 
  • Customer relations management of homeowners in the site assessment process; 
  • Developing online social marketing materials, i.e. blog postings, email blasts, wiki site content.

Qualifications:

  • Attending or completed post-secondary education in environmental studies, renewable energy or related field and/or equivalent work experience
  • Possess some knowledge of the value proposition for solar PV energy under Ontario's Feed-In Tariff program
  • An understanding of the technical aspects of basic solar system design 
  • Self-motivated 
  • Demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written) 
  • Excellent public relations skills 
  • Sense of humour and team oriented work ethic 
  • Strong computer skills, including all MS Office applications and online mapping tools
  • Experience with marketing/social marketing or business development are definite assets

Compensation:  $15-17/hour -- Commensurate with experience
