MRAG Americas, Inc. is an independent consulting business dedicated to promoting responsible, rational and sustainable utilization of aquatic resources, with offices in Massachusetts, Florida, California and Alaska. Our staff consists of a unique and highly motivated group of scientists and specialists with expertise in fisheries and aquatic resource science, management, and monitoring; fisheries observer programs; ecosystem and protected area management; government liaison and relations; and international conservation and management agreements.
Position Overview:
MRAG Americas will hire 4 Lead Dockside Monitors to provide dockside monitoring services and assist in coordination of At-sea Monitor Program in the Northeast fisheries from New York to Maine. MRAG will hire 1 Lead in each of Portland, ME, Boston, Essexs/Gloucester, and New Bedford, MA. Leads will perform dockside monitoring and aid in the coordination of several part time Dockside monitors. Dockside monitors collect scientific, management, compliance, and other data during offloads in the above ports and in other remote ports throughout the region. Leads will aid in the deployment and support of At-Sea Monitors on the fishing vessels. Leads will oversee the transmitting of data to the NMFS. Leads will have limited administrative duties with payroll and billing.
The Northeast ground fisheries are switching to a catch share program which divides existing quotas to individual vessels and develops Sectors to manage and oversee groups of vessels under Amendment 16. MRAG will contract directly with the Sectors to provide dockside monitoring of 50% of all the offloads from vessels in the Sector. In addition MRAG Americas will contract with the government to provide At-sea Monitors to all the Sectors. Leads would work in conjunction with a Program Manager to be hired by MRAG Americas and coordinated from our Essex office.
Qualifications:
The position requires:
- Prior observer experience in groundfish or marine mammals.
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in 1 of the natural sciences.
- A minimum of 30 semester hours or equivalent in the biological sciences.
- At least 1 undergraduate course in math or statistics
- Experience with data entry on computers, MS Excel, and MS Word.
- Physical fitness, including the ability to swim 100m, tread water for 3 minutes, don an immersion suit in 60 seconds, to climb a ladder, to lift and carry 50 pounds correctly.
- Lead or managerial experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of the Northeast region and or fisheries.
Compensation: Work and training will begin in mid April. Leads will earn a salary of $35,000 annually with annual raises and performance bonuses. The positions include vacation, holiday pay, health and life insurance. Leads will receive travel and housing stipends and will be provided with computer and office equipment.
