Rising Sun Energy Center (RSEC), a 501 (c)(3) corporation, works to educate and inspire people to create a society that uses water and energy responsibly and equitably. We do this by:
- Educating the public about sustainable behaviors and technologies
- Providing residential audits and services that lower energy and water usage
- Training young people in job skills and energy conservation strategies
RSEC's flagship program is California Youth Energy Services (CYES) trains and employs young people to provide free energy-efficiency education and direct-install services in local residences. Our adult workforce development program, Green Energy Training Services (GETS), focuses on whole home performance, weatherization, and energy and water conservation. Over the past 2 year Rising Sun has received national and international recognition for its California Youth Energy Services program.
With the current national focus on weatherization and energy efficiency Rising Sun is poised dramatically to expand its services and impact.
Position Overview:
Development Director to Raise Capital for Scale.
Rising Sun is seeking an experienced individual to lead and jump-start the organization's Development Program to increase capital for our organization to scale. The Development Director will be an integral part of a highly collaborative team prepared to take Rising Sun's development efforts to a new level and to accelerate execution of a successful foundation and high impact donor strategy.
The ideal candidate has proven success:
- Securing 6-figure gifts and managing a high impact donor strategy
- Developing successful and substantial grant proposals and reports
- Building and maintaining relationships across diverse donor portfolios and local and national foundations
- Effectively making decisions in a strong, consensus-oriented culture
- Planning successful fundraising events
Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for guiding and executing the organization's major donor and foundation grant strategy to ensure that all fundraising efforts align with strategic, programmatic and fundraising goals. A key strategic goal will be to raise capital to fund programs and infrastructure support to enable Rising Sun to scale its services and scope. Reporting to the Executive Director, with frequent interaction with the Deputy Director and members of the Board of Directors, the Development Director will be responsible for:
- Designing and meeting aggressive annual and long-term fundraising goals
- Creating internal and external processes that support a culture of sustained major fundraising at the local and national levels
- Developing a significant portfolio of major gift donors/prospects and managing the fundraising strategy for these donors with primary responsibility for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship (range: $5,000 to $100,000+)
- Effective ongoing in-person and written communication with donors
- Supporting Executive Director, Deputy Director, Board members, and Rising Sun staff to effectively engage in individual donor cultivation and solicitation activities
- Management and tracking of Development activities in Salesforce database (or comparable database), with regular progress reports to leadership team and Board
- Executing funding plan for multi-year growth via extensive foundation funding pipeline and grant writing program that meet Rising Sun's strategic goals
- Building relationships with external partners to utilize them in cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors
- Working collaboratively to create customized solicitation strategies that match the objectives of the organization and interests of donor prospects
- Writing and soliciting grant proposals and funding
- Design, plan, and coordinate Rising Sun fundraising events including Annual Gala
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3-5 years demonstrated major gifts experience, with direct solicitation of high-level individual donors
- Demonstrated ability to implement fundraising best practices, engage participation from all levels, and generate immense excitement for Rising Sun's work
- Strong sense of fundraising ethics and respect for confidentiality of donor information
- Outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with an ability to articulate the complex concepts of Rising Sun's work with passion and commitment
- Maturity, integrity, and experience to gain the trust and confidence of donors, leadership, staff, colleagues, and partners
- Results orientation, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously within budget and deadlines
- Strong computer skills; knowledge of Salesforce database is helpful
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Confident public speaker
- Strategic thinker and planner
- Commitment to working in a mission-driven, fast-paced environment dedicated to social change
- Understanding of social entrepreneurship and non-profit organizations and the flexibility required to effectively participate in an inclusive model of decision-making
- Minimum B.A from a 4-year college or university is required; M.A. a plus
- Strong knowledge of Bay Area philanthropy and communities a plus
- Own a car with valid driver's license and insurance ability to travel when necessary

Compensation: This is a part-time 20 hour a week position with potential for full-time growth. The salary for this position is commensurate with experience.
