Since 1991, the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) has carried out 75 projects strengthening communities in 23 countries. The organization has an annual budget of $12M and 85 staff in 7 offices.
In 2007, ISC launched a Climate and Environment Program to help hundreds of communities in the US and China- which together are responsible for 40% of the world's total green house gas emissions -- transition to a low-carbon economy and become more resilient to climate impacts. ISC has a major program in China and a rapidly growing initiative in the US. We build the capacity of communities and institutions - including governments, businesses and nonprofit organizations - to develop and implement effective climate solutions through intensive training, technical assistance and peer-learning services.
Position Overview:
ISC seeks a Program Director to oversee training and capacity building programs for US cities, towns, regions and states. As part of ISC's growing Climate and Environment Program portfolio, the position will work closely with regional nonprofit partners to design and deliver training workshops, facilitate networking and mentoring relationships among energy efficiency practitioners, create feedback loops between local and federal energy agencies and officials, develop and manage web-based learning tools, and coordinate technical assistance to cities.
Ideal candidates will have senior-level program management and training experience as well as technical expertise in energy efficiency- particularly at the municipal or state level. The Program Director will manage a small program team, oversee consulting contracts, manage ISC's relationships with its regional project partners and be ISC's main point of contact with the donor(s). The position may be located in Montpelier, VT or Washington, D.C., and will report to ISC's VP for Climate & Environmental Programs.
Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in relevant discipline;
- At least 5 years of senior program management experience - preferably working in local or state government and/or managing government funded programs;
- Experience developing and managing energy efficiency projects particularly at the state and/or local level;
- Expertise in energy efficiency practices in buildings and/or transportation;
- Strong supervisory experience, demonstrated integrity, diplomacy, team-oriented management style, and commitment to develop and maintain collaborative, team relationships in a fast-paced work environment;
- Ability to develop and sustain close relationships with program partner organizations, including local and federal government agencies and NGOs;
- Experience in developing detailed work plans, monitoring and evaluation of program results, preparing regular program reports and documentation, and financial management;
- Excellent oral/written communication, representation, and interpersonal skills; and
- Program development and fundraising experience.
Compensation: Position available pending funding. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with skills and experience.
