Save The Bay's award-winning Watershed Education Program enjoys 10 years of educating Bay Area elementary, middle and high school students and building the next generation of environmental leaders. Using San Francisco Bay as our classroom and laboratory, we offer field trips on the Bay that teach and inspire ecological stewardship and community leadership.
Position Overview:
The Education Manager will manage Save The Bay's outdoor and classroom environmental education programs. The Education Manager is responsible for ensuring high-quality program delivery, including leading programs in the field and supervising our field educators. The Education Manager will work closely with the Education Director to set and meet ambitious education department goals and continue to improve program delivery and impact.
This is a great opportunity for a strong manager with solid teaching experience and a passion for educating and inspiring youth about San Francisco Bay. This position reports to the Education Director and supervises the Field Educators and the Education Specialist.
Responsibilities:
Management:
- Oversee Save The Bay's outdoor and classroom Watershed Education Programs, ensuring high-quality implementation and positive participant experience
- Supervise field education staff and conduct seasonal evaluation of full- and part-time field education staff; and manage seasonal hiring and training of field educator teams
- Ensure rigorous safety training and proper implementation of Save The Bay risk management policies and procedures
- Oversee use and maintenance of Save The Bay field equipment
- Lead outdoor canoe and land-based field trips and classroom programs and annual teacher professional development workshops
Program Evaluation and Development:
- Develop program content and delivery methods based on current best practices in environmental education
- Work with the Education Director to raise Save The Bay's environmental education profile with schools, teachers and community leaders by strengthening our education programs and impact
- Support Education team with ongoing program evaluation
- Identify and develop new programming opportunities for Save The Bay to help meet evolving teacher and student needs and department goals
- Support Education Director to market programs to target audiences and to fundraise for support of Save The Bay's education programs
Qualifications:
- A Masters Degree or equivalent experience in Education, Environmental Studies/Ecology, or related field
- 3-5 years of outdoor and/or environmental education experience
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a team with 2 to 3 years of supervisory and program management experience
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with teachers and school leaders as well as youth
- Knowledge and expertise in environmental education, marine/estuarine ecology and experiential, inquiry-based pedagogy
- Excellent communication skills
- Must present evidence of clean motor vehicle record, proof of auto insurance, a valid California driver's license and submit to a criminal background check
- Physical ability to lift and carry heavy objects (65 lb canoes and other equipment)
- Ownership (or unrestricted access) to a vehicle to use for work purposes
- Willingness to be in the field up to 50% of the time
- Wilderness First Aid and CPR certified
Highly desirable:
- Knowledge of the natural and cultural history of the Bay and the environmental issues affecting the Bay, and the ability to share this knowledge with our audiences
- Experience working with schools and school districts in the Bay Area
- Experience working with middle and high school students
- Canoeing experience
- Fluent in a language commonly used in the Bay Area other than English
