Founded in 1983 by the eminent ecologist Dr. Gene E. Likens, the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is a world-renowned leader in applying the ecosystem approach to some of society's most pressing problems, from the quantity and quality of freshwater resources to the health of our forests. The unbiased scientific information produced by our scientists is essential to sound environmental policy, management decisions, and education curricula.

Responsibilities:

Work with the Cary Institute's Communications Office to advance the organization's mission and message to external audiences. This will entail drafting and editing promotional materials, such as press releases, newsletter articles, website content, brochures, travelling displays, event posters, and donor mailings.

Other duties include helping to compile the organization's annual report, maintaining and growing a database of media contacts, assisting with public events, identifying and developing audiences for outreach, providing editorial and programmatic support on an as-needed basis and other administrative duties as required. This position reports to the Communications Director.

Qualifications:

The successful applicant will have excellent writing and editing skills, a B.A. or B.S. degree, a professional demeanor, an understanding of science, and an interest in the environment/ecology. Past experience communicating science or working in print or internet media is a plus.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access) is required; familiarity with graphic design, HTML code, and digital photography is preferred. Must be able to meet competing deadlines, learn new skills, and work harmoniously as part of a team.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience.
